ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS! Except Wade Belak. )

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

He was pretty good in Washington but god was he rough elsewhere.. literal pylon out there. But if you can shelter him he's a good guy for the PP.

Some tough moments elsewhere, but at this point in the draft? If you use his abilities in the right space? I think it's a great pick. I'm big on a relative to era in this thing and he deserves his flowers on that score if used correctly.

Yeah at this point we're often picking players have a lot more stark strengths and weaknesses but Gonchar may be a bit more glaring than most lol. I picked him last year (I think) to be a powerplay specialist and that is pretty much what he is here.

I think holding the fastest skater for the all star game for so long even though he was quite old when he set it is very impressive.

The Dusters select HHOF left winger Herbie Lewis, the high-paying minor league all-star "Duke of Duluth" who went on to retire with the most career points of the Detroit Red Wings, until his longtime teammate Goodfellow surpassed the total a couple of years later.

...the speedy forward quickly made his mark in the NHL. In just his third game, Lewis burst through Eddie Shore and Lionel Hitchman and into the clear. Bruins goalie Tiny Thompson parried his first drive, but Lewis followed in to bury his rebound for the winner in a 2-0 victory over the team that would win the cup that spring...

As a sophomore the 23 year old led Detroit in goal scoring, then three years later leading again in goals, this time by a lot over teammates, also leading in points, as Goodfellow had moved back to the blueline this season. Lewis was then given the 'C' and captained the Red Wings for a season to its first divisional title, first Stanley Cup appearance, scoring the franchise's first finals goal, netting the first Stanley Cup playoff powerplay goal ever. That year he was the LW starter in the Ace Bailey NHL all-star game. The next year he became the highest paid NHLer and had two consecutive 4th in NHL assist seasons, the second of which he followed up by immediately helping Detroit win its first two Stanley Cup championships; a hero of the cup defense postseason, as he helped score the first three goals of the Canadiens series in a Game 1 victory, then scored the winner and insurance goal in Game 2, the team thereafter holding on as the Habs won the next two to force a Game 5 3OT, with Lewis getting the primary assist on the series-winning goal. The following season Lewis again led the Red Wings in scoring, despite a broken thumb that kept him out two weeks, the team missing the playoffs. He would retire after more injuries the following season, remembered as "one of the most electrifying players in the 1930s."

During a 1936 game with the Canadiens, Toe Blake elbowed Ebbie Goodfellow, who retaliated by crosschecking Blake. As both players were headed for the bin, Blake charged up from behind and swung his stick at Goodfellow's head. Lewis raised his stick to parry the blow, saving Goodfellow from serious injury and immediately tore into Blake. A brawl ensued and police were called to stop the fight, as virtually every Detroit player went after Blake...

That was quite the drop for Herbie compared to last year. Over 60 slots. He went a bit earlier than usual last year, and looking at other years he seems to typically go in the early 200’s. But Van and I certainly weren’t banking on him lasting all the way to 260. We were pleasantly surprised. I suppose that’s just how the board fell this year.

We love the overall package he brings, and he’s a perfect fit for what we’re trying to build. He always brings great value at a weaker position historically, IMO.

This now allows us to slide him into the LW2 slot and move Pulford to the 3rd line. It gives Messier two incredibly speedy linemates in he and Pitre, and Herbie was quite good defensively as well so it’s not as if the line is losing its defensive conscious with the loss of Pulford. Pulford now provides us a ton of flexibility for his 3rd line as we can play him at either LW or C.

Sometimes great options force you to change course just a bit..and that’s a good thing!

Dave Taylor's overall combo of abilities is rare in this range, especially among RWers.

He was a solid corner man, physical, respectable offense balanced between playmaking and goalscoring, can play with a goalscoring center, and is a good defensive player. Not a lot of those left.

You always pay a premium for this and I'm glad to pay it.

Once Armstrong, Broadbent and Perry were gone, he was my #1 priority.
