ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS! Except Wade Belak. ;) )

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Nice reunification of this great line from circa 1922-1923 @VanIslander

Thanks, BB. We eyed that trio from the second we decided to draft Nighbor. Glad we were able to see it through. Any time you can play on real-life chemistry, we think it adds a nice little boost to an ATD team, so why not!

The Regina Capitals draft left winger, Markus Naslund .

He adds a nice scoring touch to compliment Malkin and Middleton. I think his legacy is diminished because of when he peaked, but he was an elite scorer at his best.
I nearly took him. In fact I had it typed up.

Great line, but weak 1st line center for an ATD. Don't know how I feel about it!
Larionov in isolation is probably by far the weakest 1C of any team, that's certainly true, but I feel like "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" expression applies here. Krutov and Makarov as a pair of wingers are probably better than the majority of top-line winger duos, so that helps to neutralize the disadvantage of Larionov against other 1Cs somewhat. It'll be interesting to see how that top line fares head-to-head with others once voting comes up.

The Montreal Victorias selec Corey Perry, RW

@Hawkey Town 18 is on the clock
He just flipped 4 pucks at me during warmup I think because I had an Expos hat on and he might be superstitious. I gave it to a young Oiler fan visiting LA who was over the moon which was fun to see. Nice of Corey and indirectly he creates a nice memory for both of us.

Saw them live at the 1987 Canada Cup. I remember walking behind the Soviet net when they were all gathered there and was shocked at how small they were as a team but then they went out and … well you know the rest. Canadians had never seen anything like it when the Soviets came over and we had to start incorporating that or risk falling behind.

Apologies for the delay everyone, I went on the clock at 4am Chicago time and had a busy morning. Also, I had this post completely typed out and it got erased!

I went through a lot of options when trying to decide on a coach for the Shamrocks this year, and ended up settling on a guy that I didn't think would be the best candidate at first glance, but after taking a closer look at things I think he's a great fit (also some of the other guys I thought would be better fits ended up having some issues). My hesitation at first was because this guy is known as being a defense first coach, which he is, but I think sometimes it gets forgotten that he gave his forwards a lot of leeway once they were on the offensive.

Chicago selects Hap Day, Coach

From my own Bio (Hap Day - ATD 2013): Day saw to it that his troops got the puck out of their own zone as quickly as possible. Then they could worry about finding creative new ways to score.

Other reasons I think Hap Day will be a good fit for the Shamrocks:
- Starting off with Ovechkin and Lafleur, we do not have a high end #1 Dman. Day's teams were similar, as mentioned during my last set of picks, Jimmy Thomson was the best Dman of the Day teams that won 4 Cups in 5 years.
- We have 3 Centers that are strong defensively (Ullman, Modano, Toews), which will ensure that things get taken care of in their own zone.
- Lafleur, Ovechkin, Maltsev will enjoy the offensive creativity given by Day while also being able to handle his strictness (Lafleur flourished under a taskmaster in Bowman, Maltsev was successful under the Soviet system, and Ovechkin won his only Cup with an undrafted strict coach.

I won't take as long with my next pick, but do need a little time, thanks for your patience

EDIT: Some additional info on Hap Day as a coach:

Day's teams overachieved in the playoffs, winning 5 Cups, and although he also never made another Final outside of those 5 years, his teams NEVER lost a playoff series to a lower seed. Every time they were eliminated it was by a team that finished higher than them in the regular season.

In the 4 other years that Day's teams made the playoffs but did not win the Cup, all 4 years they lost to the eventual Cup Winner, and 2 of those went to a seven game series. He really has a remarkable playoff record.

For reference, here's where they finished in the regular season during the 5 Cup years: 1, 2, 2, 3, 4

To be fair Day's team did not make the playoffs 1 season, which was 1945-46 (players returning from WW2 may have had an impact).

Another feature of Day's teams was a clutch playoff goaltender in Turk Broda. He's long gone, but there are a few "money" goaltenders left. Again, I'm going to go with a guy who wasn't the first one to come to mind, but after taking a closer look, I like him here. His Vezina record was better than I remembered with significant finishes of 1, 2*, 3, 3, 5
*finished 1st in AS voting this year

Chicago selects, 2 time Cup Winner, 3 Time Finalist, and Conn Smythe Winner: Andrei Vasilevskiy, G

Vasilevskiy is currently in his 10th NHL season, but only 8th as a #1 starter, so we will need to get him a solid backup to share the load in the regular season.

The Montreal Victorias are thrilled to select Jack Campbell, D!

I'll have a bio with a more complete set of quotes, points comparisons, and (hopefully) more, but for now, here are a couple quick hits-

From a Montreal paper in 1887-

“Campbell, the finest hockey player in Montreal at present, who was the Vics cover-point, was hurt early in the game and did not play in half his usual style”

Of the ~160 players I have tracked playing for or against the Montreal teams and who debuted in the 1880s, 32 of them played 20 or more high-level games. Jack Campbell's 33 GP ranks 18th- he's no Gordie Howe there, but we aren't talking about someone with a terribly short career for his era.

His 19.5 goals ranks 8th among all players (first among players who primarily played D). His 21.5 points is also 8th among all players (first among D). No other player who played most of his time on defense comes close- the next highest total from a defender on this list has 2 goals and 7 assists for 9 points (in 67 games).

@ResilientBeast can attest that I have a bunch of quotes about his offense, but I think I can skip those here; we know from the HoH project just how good he was there. Ah, what the heck, just a couple-

"Had the Victorias been a little harder pressed perhaps their play would not have appeared so brilliant and dashing, but such play as Campbell showed can only be characterized as wonderful. His speed and his cleverness at dodging are worth going a long way to see"

“All round the Vics’ team played a splendid combination game, Campbell being the most prominent”

“One of those grand runs for which Campbell was famous..."

"Campbell at last made on of the runs for which he is now so famous, and taking the puck the full length of the ice put it through the posts”

"After a long spell of defence Campbell got the puck from almost in front of goal, saw an opening, and started on one of those phenomenal runs of his. He dodged everybody that came in his way…”

“Campbell, of the Victorias, certainly took the honors, and his run with the puck, dodging XXX, XXX, XXX, XXX, and XXX and winding up with getting the puck past XXX through the goal post was one of the finest things ever witnessed on ice”

“J. Campbell’s playing was work going a long way to see and XXX and XXX did some brilliant work also"

“Although the dodgy dashes of XXX and Campbell brought forth cheers time and again”

“Of course, the match last night did not furnish much criterion for Campbell proved time and again that he was able to play most of the opposing team”

But where I think we undersold him was his defensive ability. Here are some quotes that talk about it in pretty good detail, considering the era of newspaper coverage we are talking about-

“J. Campbell was a stone wall, and behind him XXX or XXX were thoroughly able to second him”

“The Vics forwards, with the exception of XXX, were never where they were most needed, and only for the strong defence of XXX and Campbell, who were always on hand, it is hard to say what the ultimate result might have been”

"For the winners, Campbell as usual played brilliantly at cover point"

“XXX tried to score but Campbell foiled him in his endeavor”

“...but owing to the magnificent play of Campbell they were kept at bay”

“Down came XXX with the puck at the end of his stick. A heavy check from Campbell and there was a scrimmage”

“The M.A.A. men seemed flushed with victory and immediately started their rushing tactics, but to no purpose, Campbell and XXX could not be passed”

“Campbell, at coverpoint, as usual, however, was a whole team in himself, and it was chiefly due to his fine play that some of the combined rushes of the M.A.A.A. men lost their effectiveness for scoring”

“On the Vic side, as usual, Campbell carried off the honors. He seemed the only one who could withstand the rushes of XXX successfully, and when he would up as fine a run as ever was seen in a hockey match by getting the puck past XXX and scoring he was rewarded by the unstinted applause of the spectators"

“Campbell was in his element, and was always cool and exact in his checking; he seemed to be satisfied with long shots and seldom tried running, but he made some wonderful stops”

Best defenseman picked in a very long time.

If I had known he'd fall so much I would've constructed my defense another way, as I couldn't pick Campbell and just waste him on the third pair, and my PP1 was complete. Nor could I play him with Cameron, too similar in style.

I guess not everyone will share our enthusiasm about Jack Campbell, but I ask:

What is worth the historical significance of the first ever hockey superstar, in a game where we draft players throughout all of history? I think he is worth more than falling to the late 200s.

The way I see things, Jack Campbell is a better pick for an offensive defenseman than Cale Makar, Roman Josi, Doug Wilson, Sergei Zubov, and probably Jan Suchy, unless you feel very pro-Euro and anti-early hockey history.

I'm not expecting people to buy it today, but maybe the idea will find its way eventually.

Jack Campbell was the first "best player in the world", as far as I know. That should count for something historically and in the ATD.

I knew someone would come up with that argument and it’s a valid one. I won’t try to sell anybody I’ve got one of the best 1st center. However, I honestly think I have one of the best first line.
I agree- good luck getting the puck from those three

I can buy Hap Day willing to coach Guy Lafleur and Alex Ovechkin, although I wouldn't push it any further with unidimensional scorers. IIRC his main stars were mostly centers surrounded by checking wingers, although he did have some star wingers, one of which he ran out of town in the early-1940s.

In the end, I think your team is not very difficult to coach, even if it superficially looks like it is because of Ovechkin/Lafleur. Your three centers make the job easier on a coach.

Thanks, you are correct that his offensive stars were up the middle instead of on the wings, but if anything he might actually like this setup better since generally a center can have a greater impact on the defensive side of the puck (which I believe is what you were referring to).

I think the real value I'm getting from Day (outside of him simply being one of the all-time great coaches) is how he will handle my blueline. I do not have a "star" Dman in this league and Day had great success in a similar situation (I rank Hedman/Gerard as high end #2s and Josi/Thomson as average #3s).

The Regina Capitals select centre Cooney Weiland .

Weiland is one of hockey history's greatest penalty killers and defensive centres. He was a master of the poke check and was famed for his ability to break up plays. He also brings respectable offensive skill, leading the league in points in 1930. Weiland was a playoff warrior and will anchor the third line and PK.
