ATD 2017 Draft Thread II

The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 4 extra picks.

Clock has started

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.
24 hour clock for round 1
then 12 hour clock for round 2
then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-6,
then 8 hour clock for rounds 7-14,
then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-25

One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick (two hour deduction for missing a 12 hour clock - leave a list), with a minimum 4 hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Full, unrestricted trading is allowed in this draft according to the following rules:

Trading is to be reasonably fair and balanced and lopsided trades will need to be re-worked or dropped. This is at the discretion of the trade committee.
Each team may make up to 8 trades.
A submitted trade counts towards the maximum, even if it is vetoed (exception - first time GMs). Don't submit lopsided trades.
No more than 4 assets per team may be traded at a time.
Swapping all positions before the draft doesn't count as a "trade" for the purposes of the above rules.
Trading while on the clock is allowed. However, using your entire clock to openly shop a pick annoys your fellow GMs, so do it sparingly. If GMs abuse trading on the clock, a rule could be added against it

4). ADD/DROPS - At the conclusion of the draft, there will be a 7 day period for add/drops. All add/drops must be 1-for-1. Dropped players will NOT be eligible to be added by other teams.

5). At the conclusion of the draft, there will be a 10 day period for lineup assassinations.

6). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a potential lowering in the standings because each GM will rank his own team first. Co-GMs who both vote each get half a vote for the regular season rankings in their own division. Seedings will be hidden and the playoff matchups will be posted and tabulated by a 3rd party.

7). The playoffs will work according to the following format:
Round 1 Division Quarter Finals :Top 4 Seeds of each division face off 1v4 2v3
Round 2 Division Semi Finals: Winner of each previous matchup face against the other winner within their divison
Round 3 Conference Semi Finals: Winners in each conference face off
Round 4 Draft Finals: Winners of conference semi finals face off

Similar format will be in place for the 9 teams who fail to make the playoffs (bragging rights are on the line)

Some thoughts on the recent picks:

Ted Kennedy: Nice to see former US senator Ted Kennedy get picked here. Seriously though it's a good pick. Probably in a 25 team draft he's towards the 16-20 range for #1 centres, not sure how sprague will use him as he has Lalonde but if he has Kennedy as #2 centre or Lalonde he'll have a great 1st line started.

Valeri Vasilev: Good pick, arcand waited to get his #1 defenseman and probably got one of the last of the truly good to great #1 defensemen in this.

Mark Howe: Another good pick. On a team with Ovechkin and Hull already Howe is a great fit for rmartin.

Bill Quackenbush: Like Vasilev, one of the last truly good to great #1 defensemen. Good pick for chaos.

Toe Blake: Went to my division rival, vanislander and namba drafts one of the truly great left wingers of all time.

Aurel Joliat: I've looked at him in the past but have never picked him, he's a good pick.

Norm Ullman: A good pick, I've always liked him, seems like a good all around #1 centre. As others have said though you need defense soon. Though Joliat, the Rocket, Bathgate and Ullman is a great quartet of forwards to start your team with, jarek.

Boris Mikailov: In a division that has lots of good 1st line right wingers you got a good 1 in Mikhailov. Blake-Nighbor-Mikhailov is a good 1st line, van islander and namba.

Frank Mahovlich: Good pick by JFA especially when you consider that he's going to be on Lemieux's left wing.

Elmer Lach: Nice pick for a team that has Hull and Ovie. You need a good all around centre like Lach. Solid pick, rmartin.

Johnny Bucyk: He went early this year as others have said but the fit with Espo makes it a great pick, good work I say to arcand.

Ken Dryden: The last of the 7 great all time goalies. I've often wondered how higher Dryden would be on the goalies list all-time had he played longer, as it is he's top 7 for goalies all time in anyone's book.

Cy Denneny: Had him in 2013, I paired him with Clarke on my 1st line and got good reviews for that. Drafted him as a goal scoring winger. He did a lot more, he should do well next to Apps.

Brett Hull: Will be a good fit next to Crosby. Could be a fun goal scoring duo, those 2.

Jarome Iginla: Not ready to comment yet. Seriously though as I said it's a good pick for your team. Just wish he would have lasted to 93.

Anyway those are my thoughts on the recent picks. Another decent run over the past day, keep it up.

How are the roughly 25th and 26th best defensemen "truly great" #1 defensemen in a 26-team draft?

I have Seibert (approximately 16th) and I'd never describe him as "truly great" relative to the other #1s in this draft.

Mistyped there. These guys are very good defensemen for sure, maybe not great but you got to admit that after Vasilev, Howe and Quackenbush there is a drop off in the quality of defensemen that are available.

no, not really, I think it's pretty linear from here.

And of course they're great in absolute terms, but so are the guys we'll be getting in round 15. The question is how good are they as #1s, and they're bottom of the barrel for a smaller draft.

I want to make one thing clear - Denneny was a good pick. I had him as the best left wing left along with Mahovlich, even when I took Joliat. If I had Gordie Howe instead of Richard, I probably would have taken him or Mahovlich instead, but team building forced me in a specific direction.

Being smart or dumb is not something that varies through the season. If you are dumb on shift one, you're going to be dumb on shift one hundred.

Yes they were a pair from 1948-1950 to the best of my knowledge, Stewart - Quackenbush was also a pair at various times on that great Red Wings team.

Our scouts loved everything about Stewart, especially his animalistic physical game. His chemistry with Red Kelly made it a no brainer.

I agree. But in the long run they are usually not that important. For one great second assist there are tons of nothing special.

I can, however, look at the NHL and USSR leaderboards and not pick out an example season where a soviet scorer was so dominant against his competition that he could have feasibly challenged for the NHL scoring lead.

Once again - you just presume, that the NHL was better and Soviet scorer should dominant his competition to win the NHL title. I may agree with this for 50s and 60s and, to less extent, for 80s (since 82), but I don't see any reasons to agree with it for 70s, or, more particular, for 72-82 period.

Keep in mind that in the USSR’s heyday we’ve got the Orr/Espo combo and then Gretzky lapping the field, and the guys in the 4 years inbetween were no slouches either.

Keep in mind, that in the USSR heyday your "no slouches" guys had their ass kicked 6:0 and 8:1. Probably, it's they are and not the Soviets, who need to be extrapolated to USSR league? (I don't think so, I just show you, that your "Canadian-is-the-best" approach may be wrong sometimes).

In my opinion St. Louis is better than Iginla, though Iginla brings some physicality which is very useful in this setting.On the other hand, St. Louis is a strong playmaker for a winger.
