I was looking at full season productivity over the past several seasons. My point was that even the best under-19 year olds seldom produce points at a high rate at the Liiga level, so it's a bit encouraging that Vesalainen is already in the mix offensively at the beginning of his 18-year old season.

Just like Kotkaniemi, Kristian has only played 3 games so it's too early to say

edit. Kotkaniemi played tonight so he is at 4 gp now

Of course it's too early, but it's a good sign that he's in the mix early, and reasonable to temper expectations for an 18-year old and his role and production in Liiga.

HPK won today 1-5, Vesalainen playing on the 3rd line with 13 min TOI, 2 shots and 0+0. Some fans praising and liking, others not so much. Some are saying that he does too much wrong choises on oz and choking with Puck.

Only 10mins of ice time again. I don't think he got any PP time either. Pretty disappointing

Disappointing? I don't think so...well maybe a little, depending on what you're expecting from him. The Jets can take their time, let him find his game and mature. He did throw a pretty nasty hit though.

Disappointing from a Jets fans perspective since a bigger role in his team would help his development and make the game more enjoyable for me

playing in a mens league in the D+1 season I am not all that worried. He is a late first round pick too so my expectations are always going to be grounded with Kristian. Two or three seasons from now if a 24th overall pick can join the Jets and help out anywhere in the top 9 that would be a win.

I hope I didn't give the impression that I'm worried about him. Gotta be patient with prospects, no matter where they're drafted. Just not very fun to watch Liiga games to see him and he ends up playing 10mins

Yea I remember not really even thinking much about the Roslovic pick and was pleasantly surprised when he panned out to be a really solid prospect.

Player evaluation has improved drastically in the last decade so I don't think the amount of wasted 1st round picks is that high anymore.

Post lockout:
Max Jones - Too early to tell
Travis Konecny - Too early to tell, but looks good
Jared McCann - Too early to tell, but looks good
Hunter Shinkaruk - Too early to tell, but doesn't look good
Malcolm Subban - Still too early to tell. The few NHL performances are not very good tho
Matt Puempel - Miss
Kevin Hayes - Hit
Marcus Johnsson - Hit
Mattias Tedenby - Miss
Mikael Backlund - Hit
Dennis Persson - Miss
T.J Oshie - Hit

It is pretty clear at this point that this kid was drafted only because he has "laine" spelled in the last name, and with Laine you know you can't go wrong. The only question is, why did the other 23 teams not notice this?

I've tried watching some of his games but it becomes too frustrating not seeing him on the ice due to the lack of PK/PP time and short usage.

Vesalainen is lot more difficult to pronounce than Laine.

True, but easier than "Patrik Laine".

To pronounce Vesalainen you have to first know how to say "Vesa", then just say "Laine" as you already can and an N to the end. Just put all of those together.

"Ve" is pronounced like "we" in "well" and "sa" is pronounced like "so" in "something". "Laine" is pronounced exactly like "Laine" you already know, and "n" is always the same "n", also in Canada.

There are 4 syllables in Ve-sa-lai-nen, just like in "Pat-rik Lai-ne".

Not sure why we picked him.. With guys like Tolvanen and Kostin on the table still. Would've rather just gone with the best talent possible. Never quite seen top 6 potential in him.

Hopefully he proves me wrong.

The Jets' scouts obviously thought he was a better prospect, and they probably weren't alone in that assessment. It's much too early to assess that assessment. I haven't seen him that much, but his performance at the U-18 was outstanding and tantalizing. He looked like much better than a bottom-6 talent. Whether he reaches that potential is uncertain, with lots of variables that will influence his trajectory.

To be fair, no one here other than one poster (puck_stoppa) wanted us to draft Tolvanen. Most here were not keen on Tolvanen with our 1st. Props to Tolvanen for proving his doubters (including myself) wrong.

He seems to get minutes just fine, a little less when there's a lot of PP/PK

his stats for each game: http://liiga.fi/pelaajat/29885743/vesalainen-kristian/ottelu-ottelulta

(the game where he got only 10 min was a 109 penalty minutes type of game.. :amazed: )

You are right I double counted the Karpat game and thought there had been multiple games where he played just 10 mins

I was quite high on Vesalainen pre-draft, suggesting that he might even be an option at #13. I won't abandon that perspective at this point.

Of course right now I would take Tolvanen over Vesalainen any time really. But it's easy to say with hindsight. Maybe I would have rather picked Tolvanen even earlier, but it would have been anyway a difficult decision then. They had that much more comparable careers before. But this season Tolvanen has been absolutely amazing, while Vesalainen has been ok, but not really special. So can't really blame the Jets scouting, they couldn't know the development Tolvanen would have coming to this season, as didn't any other team either.

I do still have a pretty good feeling about Vesalainen, although I might not see real star potential in him. But he could maybe become a solid middle six NHL-player in a few years, if everything goes right for him.

I, for one, would have gone with Oettinger at 24, given what we had available for us. It is important, however, to keep in mind that literally everyone who I wanted us to select there pre-draft went within eight spots before us (basically, every half-decent C and D prospect that could realistically have been there), so it is not like I was very keen on Oettinger. Vesalainen was not a bad choice by any means, even if the need for wingers is (and was) not there. I guess you could say the same about Tolvanen too, though.

How do you know they didn't go with the best talent? He destroyed the U18's. He was ranked higher on a lot of boards than Kostin or Tolvanen.
