That's not how it works, lol. There's no transfer agreement. He's not a hostage. He can just go back to his home country and play hockey. Won't change him being under Preds control if he wants to play in NA, but he's not a hostage here.
Wrong. There is no transfer agreement. But the leagues are honoring eachothers' contracts. The KHL isn't going to want all their young prospects under contract to leave, they aren't going to stop honoring NHL contracts. and having the NHL honor theirs, over Askarov. CSKA and the RIHF were both heavily sanctioned over the Fedotov case, and that had a lot of "other things going on" beyond just a player jumping ship. Askarov isn't a hostage. He can go back to Russia. But he won't be able to play professional hockey there.

San Jose needs to get ALL over this. You have 2 franchise centers, a franchise winger and you can trade for Askarov and run the gambit on defense this coming draft. Do it and your rebuild isn't over as much as it has all the pieces in place for success. Goaltending is the hardest piece to get
Blackwood and Vitek you're good!

This is why the Devils shouldn't have rushed for their goalie.
Agreed but he had to do something. Stunned that Preds didn't ask for our 1st this yr

Montreal just added to their war chest full of picks with the Laine trade, I still but believe how cheaply they got him.

But if I'm Montreal I'm all over this because I have ALL the draft picks

I have to believe they talked with Nashville re: both Askarov and Saros before trading for Markstrom, and most likely the prices were too high.

There is no way NJ could get to August before the year started with just Jake Allen and Nico Daws as their two NHL goalies, just waiting for some goalie to magically become available.

What would Preds fans realistically want in return for him? (He definitely is one of the top goalie prospects in the world but Nashville couldn't have as much leverage when he's the one wanting out, so perhaps an early round pick? Or do the Preds have positional needs to address still?)

Possible comparables:
- Georgiev - stuck behind Igor, Avs acquired for 3rd and 5th
- Logan Thompson - stuck behind Hill but maybe Vegas feared an expensive extension? 2* 3rd
- Schmid - not one for one, but he was highly rated before this season, so this may count as the low-end? Him and another project in Holtz for Cotter and 3rd = depth return?
- Blackwood - filler #1 in SJ, but he did have promise = 6th round pick

- Jake Allen - 1B caliber, which Yaro and his future employer may view him as that? Conditional 2nd
- middle of the road: Kahkonen for Vanecek+ low pick/ DeSmith for Pearson+ 3rd = replacement goalie and filler?
- Adin Hill to VGK - 4th
- Ville Husso to DET - 3rd
- Vanecek to NJ (along with 2nd) - 2nd and 3rd => him for 3rd?

- high-end: Markstrom for 1st and Bahl/ Ullmark for Korpisalo/ Kastelic/ 1st (early round pick plus younger serviceable piece, though he doesn't have nearly the resume to command that on his own at this point IMO)

**Wonder if the first 4 (Georgiev/ Thompson/ Schmid/ Blackwood) would be the most likely returns, and these being mid-round picks and depth. Vancouver years ago did trade Cory Schneider who was ready to start for a #9 pick (Bo Horvat) but those trades are exceedingly rare since goalies are kinda voodoo and unpredictable**

But I was told the day Saros signed that this is how you "develop goalies" in that thread

None of those guys you mentioned are close to Askarov's pedigree at all pre NHL

Flyers should be on this

Ersson + Barkey or Knuble + Avalanche or Oilers 1st (Preds choice at draft)

Preds recoup a 1st and get a solid prospect in Knuble or Barkey and Ersson competes with Wedgewood for #2 spot behind Saros. Loser ends up in AHL

Orange County Prison
Preds choice of Vanacek (decent backup caliber goaltender) or Blackwood (younger and cheaper with higher upside)
Bordeleau (NHL ready former 2nd rounder middle 6 winger with ties in the Nashville org)
Bystedt (recent first round pick)

for Askarov

is it enough? if not, what should be added? Our 1st rounders for the next 2 seasons are off the table. And don't even utter the word 'Macklin'.

William Eklund.

I don't think San Jose gives up a future 1st, but it isn't that crazy of an idea if it is top 10 protected. Askarov is a 22 year old former 11th overall pick who is under team control until he is 27. We're talking about a long term core piece.

Clearly, nobody valued Askarov enough to give up a top 10 pick this year or next year, but a top 10 protected 2025 pick either means that San Jose is giving up a pick outside the top 10 of the 2025 draft, or they are giving up an unprotected 2026 pick, which should be in that 6-15 type wheelhouse.

Well...the Laine trade is a bit of a suprise and a total steal IF he settles to his former self.

Maybe Santa Hughes has another trade up his sleeve for Askarov...or not.

Askarov to the habs makes sense. Maybe for Mailloux ?
Mailman is the most offensively gifted RHD and huge size. He's not going anywhere.

We got Fowler in the pipeline.

RHD is one of our weakest positions of depth so prefer not to

I'm sure Preds could use picks for trade deadline capital to go all in next couple of years so maybe the lesser of our 1sts this year and the 2026 2nd we just picked up from CBJ

I'd give up the unprotected Vegas pick.

Nice try, but there's no chance Askarov lands William Eklund.
