Arizona bears watching. They just lost four in a row at home outscored 16-5. They are available as a trade partner. In a few weeks (after Eastern trip that includes Rangers) there may be management changes. They were close to making changes last year before they went on a bit of a roll. Owner is losing money hand over fist (so what else is new) no new building in sight and frustration growing. Much worse than I expected.

Who do they have that you see as a potential target for us?

Perlini (22) had 17 goals last year. Fischer (21) had 15. Both are struggling badly. Both are young. Perlini in particular seems to be chafing with management. There’s talk they want to move Goligoski but the only way he comes east is if one of the deplorables (Staal, Smith etc.) heads west.

There’s a good lesson here...few middle 20 veterans to steady the ship. Almost all kids. Stepan can’t do it all. They really need another veteran or two.

$ an issue here too.

Strome for Hayes?

Golden boy Chayka on the way out?

Might come sooner than you think. I’m sure you’re well aware they lost 6-1 at home to Calgary tonight while giving up 3 short handed goals.

If the Devils don't start to get better goaltending and Hall doesn't become Wayne Gretzky again this year they may be looking at a bottom 5-10 spot.

Tampa Bay Lightning are 1st overall. This is their year. They should have won it last season. They played a bad series against the Capitals who shut them out in games 6 & 7 to win after being down 3-2. Vasilevskiy has missed the last few weeks with a broken foot and they keep winning with Louis Domingue. Vasilevskiy is supposed to miss 4-6 weeks.

Nashville is also due.

Chayka was touted as an analytics guy, but their analytics suck. His vision is not bearing out.

Analytics are not really the aim, they're the result of good hockey. Chayka has no hockey background, and I wonder if he has the ability to identify hockey skills that are going to lead to good numbers.

I think statistics can certainly illuminate a lot of things we've missed, but we have the benefit of reading them after the player is employed. A GM has to be able to identify who's going to be good beforehand.

What he has is a collection of guys who succeeded in roles, but not a whole lot of talent. Jesper Fast is a good example of a role player with good analytics. You wouldn't acquire him to play in your top 6.

The Devils have had a brutal schedule so far. They had a 7 game road trip. They have been blown out twice in Tampa. They aren't playing in Tampa anymore.

I understand but I just don't see that level of "magic" they got last year from Hall who carried the team with some amazing play happening again. Without him playing at that level they aren't a playoff team and compounded with sub par goaltending they aren't close to a playoff contender. Hey I hope I'm wrong. I hope they squeeze into the playoffs like last year and get ousted in 4 or 5 in the first round.

Sign me up for either of those guys.

That being said, the Rangers' major weakness is keeping pucks out of their own net. They've been losing a lot of games giving up a lot of goals.

I'd look to trade one of the centers for some help on defense. The Rangers really like Adam Fox and the player wants to play in the New York area. He's from Long Island. Does he have top pairing upside? I have him pegged as having more of a top 4 ceiling with lots of power play time.

If I was the Rangers, I'd continue to draft defensemen in the late 1st/2nd/early 3rd rounds. Continue to draft elite offensive talent high unless there's a Doughty or Pietrangelo-like talent available where you're picking. I like Byram this upcoming year. I just happen to like the forwards slated to go top 10 better.

Are we a good fit with AZ? I would have thought they are looking for guys already under contract, rather than guys like Hayes, MZA who are expiring and they'd have to convince/overpay to stay.
Unless we can somehow convince them they want one of Staal/Smith as they starting to get into the years where their cap hit is greater than their salary

Speaking of Arizona

What a goddamn steal, Strome is going to be good if hes given consistent ice time

Schmaltz is a 50 point player at 22

Strome is a borderline bust but has upside and Perlini is solid

If Strome busts this is good for Arizona. If he doesn’t, Chicago probably wins this one

I think the Coyotes have generally made good moves but they are winning small battles and losing the war. Chayka has a real short checkbook to work with.
