If anyone is interested in reading an excellent but very troubling book about rape culture among athletes (college athletes, but the same general situations seem to apply) I can't recommend Missoula by Jon Krakauer enough.

I'm trying to stay neutral but I tend to lean more toward siding with the victim in cases like this, whether or not that's fair. Also I feel like Patrick Kane has pretty much exhausted his benefit of the doubt at this point.

I read that book a couple weeks ago. Krakauer is such a great writer and reporter. Very disturbing but I also highly recommend it.

Also makes a lot of the internet comments about these situations even more disgusting.

there are literally no details at all, so i can't imagine forming any opinion at all, or why anyone would want to (at all)

just the existence of this situation is crazy tho

This is my feeling, too. I don't like that this is a situation at all, but aside from acknowledging that it is I'm going to wait to find out details before I form an opinion.

The amount of people victim shaming without any clue of what happened is depressing.

Not going to say anything. As damaging as actions can be to the supposed victim, they can be damaging to the other person if they are merely claims.

Also read "Crossing the Line" by Laura Robinson. No NHL but extensive Junior Hockey stuff. Really illuminating read.

Kane needs to cut ties with his idiot friends in Buffalo. His family might not be any better. Seems like every single time he gets himself into trouble, he's either hanging out with old friends or family in Buffalo, or one of his friends from Buffalo is with him somewhere else.

No doubt though he is a total knucklehead. Kind of person who isn't mature enough to tell his friends to **** off if they ask him to do something stupid.

I just don't understand what goes through a famous guy or athlete's head when he puts himself in a situation that can possibly put him in trouble. Like, even if it's just something as meaningless as a fight at a bar. Why? ROR and his drunk driving... Why?

Do these guys really think of themselves as invincible? It's crazy. You're under such a microscope already, and people are always looking to nitpick every little thing you do, and then you put yourself in a situation to commit a heinous crime? ****ing dumb.

I hope for his and the NHL's sake that this investigation doesn't come up with any hard evidence and he's not guilty of what he's reportedly accused of. If he's found guilty, he should be permanently banned from the league. There's no room for that kind of vile, unforgivable **** anywhere.

If there's enough to bring formal charges and a trial, most likely he'll be gone. He'll get Voynoved.

The Blackhawks shouldn't stick up for him in that case either.

Yeah, I mean, I know there are next to no details out there right now, but if his house is being searched and they're gathering evidence for formal charges and that sort of thing, it's time for Kane to be gone from the sport. For good.

Social media dictates that. The NHL wont try and brush it off like the NFL did last year and face that massive backlash.

This is the part that really intrigues me.

The caliber of player. If Voynov was as good as Doughty, how many people would say well that's just a shame rather than, what an idiot he deserves his punishment and then some.

Kane, if found guilty, should be banned from the NHL permanently. The NHL should have absolutely no wiggle room on this unless they want to be a joke like the NFL and NBA.

See, what interests me is if he's convicted and the league bans him, what happens next? Does he go off to the KHL or another European league? Would other leagues be willing to look past it? Probably. Does he try the whole counciling/rehab/finding Jesus thing in an attempt to get the ban lifted after some time? Do more women come forward at some point?

Honestly, even if he's guilty he'll probably be able to throw money at it to make it all go away well enough, either by a payoff or a really expensive legal defence.

I don't think he can Kobe the situation away.

The leagues that the NHL has a transfer agreement will likely hold up their decision and not allow him to play. The most interesting thing will be when Voynov is released from prison, will the KHL reach out to him and if they do...that will definitely sour their relationship with the NHL and they are still negotiating a transfer agreement fee and for Voynov to go play there, it would hurt the negotiations and say if Kane is guilty, there is no way in hell he can appeal that ban, what's he going to say?

"Hey guys, I know I totally scarred a woman for life, in such a way that it will forever mess up her trust in men and I violated her, but look, I did like 500 hours of community service and like 6 months at resort with no cable which is basically like prison these days, let me come back!" - No bueno. Kane never seemed all that intelligent, he seemed like a guy that needed to make it in sports otherwise he'd just end up working wherever his dad worked.

You take someone like O'Reilly who's at an age where people are already prone to doing dumb stuff and throw an insane amount of money at them and it's kind of inevitable that some of them are going to screw up.

What Kane is being accused of is on a whole different level though, there's no amount of "youthful indiscretion" that can explain that away.

Agreed 100%. I hope I didn't come across as implying what Kane is alleged of as being "woops, I ****ed up."

Well, if he's convicted, I hope he's jailed so he plays in no league.

This is my take, as well (and also a great recommendation by Dying Alive too).

One of the things that has soured me on sports culture and sports fans from my time working in sports media is exactly the same kind of ****-shaming, women-hating juvenile ********* that pops up. I love hockey, I love sports, and I compete fairly regularly still in judo. But having dealt with that regressive weirdness on multiple levels over the last few years, I'm glad I no longer work in sports media and I don't much contact with sports fans outside of a few people here and my family. Something's really wrong with how we as a culture deal with athletes on all levels.

This guy says hello:

ben_roethlisberger.jpg

As does the Duke Lacross team and those poor Schmucks who Rolling Stone wrote that false article about basically saying that they raped the bed carrying girl.

Not saying he did not do it. Not saying that he did.

That is the point. Charges do not necessarily mean that the guy is guilty of anything other than having a huge paycheck and name recognition so that a number of people can cash in one way or another.

Pro Athletes should have learned by now the target that they walk around with every day and getting a little bit of honey while out drunk somewhere is like playing with a loaded gun.

Ben was still suspended for a quarter of the season. And the league suspended Voynov long before he was found guilty. If there are charges filed and the league doesn't suspend Kane at all it won't look good.

Sports culture and rape culture meeting is awful. The problems with women are present in both and an independent ****show. You see some deeply disturbing things in all three alone but together it's pretty horrifying.

Ah, humanity.
