Check out the deals we handed out over last summer. All "overpaid" initially but in a handful of years as the cap goes up they'll look like average salaries.

Furthermore, the Caps' window is NOW (just like ours). There was no one else who could replicate what he did. Or they could have gamble that Calvin DeHaan signed with them, again not a given

Letang has been better than Carlson easily his whole career until this year.

Carlson put up the offensive equivalent of Letang’s 2016 season (Letang did it in less games) and is so, so much worse defensively. Better than Letang this year for sure, but every other year it’s not been close.

I understand that. Taking that into consideration at the time, it may have seemed pretty fair or a little bit of an over payment. That's the thing about term. 4 years later it isn't a bad contract at all.

It’s not a terrible deal but it’s not great. Letang had proven he was an elite defenseman at the time of his contact and stayed elite (albeit injury prone) until perhaps this year, he was also younger at the time. Carlson’s season now was a huge one off from his career average.

I lived in San Antonio for 8 months and while I did love the river walk, clubs and resturants. I absolutely loved the hootnanny ho-down club too even they shunned my coal cracken northeastern accent and dressing.
