Interesting. It should be pointed out Washington's window has narrowed a lot in the last couple years. They are a team that is aging and they're not deep in prospects or younger players and Pronman put them last on his current list.

Finding that established coach are the things that teams tend to do when they're around and/or passing their sell by date. Laviolette may keep their collective heads above water for a while but the Caps future is not looking very pretty. It's very hard to give up on the dream--we had some of that same issue where our team had been spinning its wheels for a couple years before Gorton pulled the plug. Most teams don't seem to go that way and signing someone like Laviolette points to the Caps reluctance to blow it up and start all over.

See Pittsburgh, Penguins

Although the pens were able to somehow inject enough support into the roster over the years to keep them going. We'll see if the caps have a bounce back under Laviolette. They can still piece together another run.

Yeah--either team might have another run in them (maybe even two though that's more doubtful) but they're also both at the point of diminishing returns and not a whole lot to build again with.

I don't begrudge Zucc for chasing the money honestly. He almost died so go get yours

And honestly, I'm not sure Dallas ever had any serious intentions of wanting to sign him anyways. They could have very easily given him the 5th year, but then they would have to send us their 1st.

Say what you want about Dallas but the trade worked in their favor completely. They made a decent run last year with Zucc, and they keep their 1st this year and made it to the cup finals. That's an easy trade for a 2nd and 3rd.

You gotta do what you gotta do.

But I can't help but feel Zucc feels like the guy who pouted before leaving one job and then chose the wrong opportunity for his next job.

Essentially he chose the higher salary, but ended up in a company that was downsizing and didn't have the best benefits package.

Part of me feels bad for him, and then part of me is like, "Hey, it's your bed."

I was really surprised Zucc chased the money. He landed in a really good spot and for a guy who felt slighted by the Rangers moving him it was odd to see him leave a team that seemed to really want him to stay quite badly. Maybe there was more to it than just the extra year and cash but it was just an odd move all around.

Like seeing the Stars get into the final. After the cool story last year the shine really wore off Vegas for me.

100%. Seemed like he loved it there and they loved him... and then, he went to a place that was a really bad fit with no real chance at success (though obviously he did get one more year on the deal).

This is true, maybe Dallas had no real intention of signing him and losing their 1st but just wanted to make it look like they were trying. I have zero problems with Zucc choosing the extra year and 6 million. This is his last contract and that's a lot of money.

They offered him the same AAV and only 1 year less so they obviously had interest in bringing him back.

They were smart not to match. Zucc has every right to chase the money, but the shine of him being a heart and soul "team" guy who wants to win has really worn off between the way he pouted on his way out of here, ran after the most money to a middling team and then proceeding to lay an egg and pout again because things weren't going well in Minnesota.

Glad we avoided that mess.

From DAL POV: Pavelski >>>> Zucc

I think some of that old guard had difficulty dealing with the letter. I got the sense that Miller, Nash, Zucc, Henrik and maybe a couple others were really never on board. From Nash's POV it meant he was going to get moved right away though. I don't necessarily blame for that---underlying that is a belief that they could still accomplish things together and that they still could have made the playoffs in 2018 and made a Cup run. Put in other words being competitive they didn't see the writing on the wall that was apparent to Gorton and most of the fans.

But anyway Zucc played like crap most of the next season--like a condemned man and/or a resentful one. That kind of attitude he had to go. Then all his nonsense last year about the Rangers not treating Henrik fairly and it's not his team any longer. I like Zucc really but he's had a couple bad years not only mentally and emotionally but his game has suffered for it too. He needs to get it together.

The reason it came into being was that everytime a team got pinned it its own end or a line got stuck in a poor matchup situation someone would deliberately put the puck over the glass and for some teams it became just a basic strategy of playing a defensive style of game--Florida in the 90's would do it so often that their games were regularly 3 and a half hour affairs. I'm not a great fan actually of the Brodeur rule actually where goalies can't wander into corners--that said the further the goalie wanders away from the crease IMO the more leeway other teams should have to hit him.

The Avery rule was another farce---not so much that they made it but they made it overnight.

Yeah, I remember when it was an easy out from a bad situation for teams. I don't have a problem with the rule/punishment. It's just like players are told they are responsible for their sticks at all times, in relation to accidental high sticking.

It sucks for Whitecloud that it ended that way but the VGK as a whole are more to blame for blowing a two goal third period lead and being shell-shocked in the OT to begin with.

Just spit-balling but If the NHL wanted to get creative (they wouldn't) they could treat it like icing with two additions: On the draw, the defensive center can't touch the puck on the drop, thus giving the offensive team possession. If the defensive team ices or shoots the puck over the glass a second time before the puck clears the zone, then a minor penalty is assessed.

Theres no way Tampa wins tonight. We're at next level jinx status, where even the professional pundits are already penciling in a Dallas/Tampa final.
