I know Fletcher has said the same ol' we're keep 11 unless something good comes along but I think he might trade it for immediate help or trade down.

The issue with the Hayes deal was never about how much he’s currently worth (which I think is being undervalued here, he’s a real good player), it’s about how much he would be worth AFTER receiving his contract.

That dude is blacking out every night this summer. If you thought Brendan Smith was bad about letting a contract get to his head, wait for Hayes. I’d be willing to bet it’s a lot worse.

I didn't say he wasn't a 2nd line center... I said he wasn't a second line center on a contending team.

You literally responded to my post with 'But they signed Hayes, not a second line center.' That undoubtedly implies that you don't think he's a second line center.

Hayes is a second line center. And he is a pretty decent one at that. There is an arguable case to be made that he is, in fact, one of the top 30 centers in the NHL.

Just for some perspective, I don't think Brayden Schenn is light years better than Hayes, and he was the top center on the cup winning team.

I think for me, some of it is also finding guys who are real difference makers.

I like Hayes, but I don't love him. And part of the difference in those two terms is whether I feel like he's a guy who pushes a team over a certain threshold. I've never quite gotten that vibe from Hayes. I never have, going back to before he was drafted. And even accounting for his use in Winnipeg, I just haven't seen anything that makes me question that belief.

So then we start getting into dollars and years, and I look at what his strengths are, and I become concerned about how he ages. Then I start thinking about movement clauses (if there is one) and the entire package starts to add up quickly.

So for me it's not just an extra million per season, it's also an extra 7 million for the 7th season, or the legit concerns I have about the combined $21 million for the last three seasons.

So now we're talking about a lot of money, and restrictions on moving the contract, for a guy whose speed is not going to carry him for an extra season or two as other skills start to decline, and whose biggest supporters even acknowledge as being a "good" but not necessarily "great" player.
I agree with all of this, from general perspectives on Hayes to the size of the contract. I just think there's probably another team that would've given him 7x7, and if that's the case, if that's the market, it's not a massive overpayment. I wouldn't sign him to that but that's how system works.

Good for Hayes. Always liked him especially seeing his game get better and grow from 85 to 200 feet.

I always felt this was an underrated aspect of Hayes. I think because of the way he looks, as well as his style of play (which is not based on speed) people just write him off as being stupid and lazy.

Hayes almost always improved. His improvement in face-offs has been especially impressive. Except for his sophomore year where he took a bit of a step back, I always felt he added new elements to his game, or improved on ones that were lacking.

Again, I'm happy we're not saddled with that contract, but I think it's completely fair in this day and age for what he brings to the table.

I also think Philly is going to be damn good for a few years.

Corey Perry being bought out. Wow. Didn't see that coming.

Yeah, that one is out of left field and really doesn't help the team all that much $-wise against the cap over the 4 years it'll run. I would've kept him for the next two and been done with it. Kinda like buying out Shattenkirk would be for the Rangers.

It's like divorce - it's cheaper to keep her.

I've liked Hayes from the beginning....I've always said he's most effective with speedy wingers because of his ability to hold the puck (note his best numbers years came playing with speedsters like Hagelin and Grabner).

He's also one of the few players who managed to improve despite playing under AV.

There were rumors last offseason that this year was going to be Perry’s last chance to turn it around and stay with the Ducks. They’re also an internal budget team, and I think this saves them some real money

That was the word. But Bob pulled the trigger. That 2nd year cap hit is bad. Really thought they would wait another year to see how he does. Ducks are not really going anywhere next season, and feel waiting a year to possibly buy him out would be the better route.
