Around the NHL - Part XLV (Playoffs edition)

Run it back
The Maple Leafs, as the roster is constituted, never seemed to be a Craig Berube type of team. They are the NY Rangers of Canada.

We'll see if the Leafs add more Berube-type players and let the Marner (who I do NOT want for the Rangers; he's a younger version of Panarin)/Tavares go in free agency. Matthews only signed a 4 year deal a year ago, maybe in the next year or two, either he wants out or the dangle him in trade talk. Their defence has always been a mish-mash; their goaltending iffy at best.

the Tavares signing was their version of the Panarin signing. It didn't make sense when it happened and in retrospect was not a good move. It was hilarious because Islander fans flipped a shit but it just never really addressed anything that Toronto needed addressed. They had the offensive core that they needed, they didn't need to add another big name to that (contrast to the Rangers who had no names, but needed to figure out wtf they had before adding a big name.)

They needed to add the D to push Reilly to 3rd or 4th on that group instead of running him as a #1.

They added grit just to add it too with out considering whether or not the players were actually good.

The biggest issue was Taveres cap hit as it elevated the rest of the cores salaries and started the issues that still plague them.

To be fair, they might have won the series with Stolarz in net but we'll never know. Maybe he steals game 3 and the Leafs go up 3-0.
Laughton, Lorentz, Jarnkrok, Domi, Pacioretty, the entire blueline -- these all feel like Berube types.

Toronto medias reaction is always a fun listen because it’s as delusional and insane as the people who post on these boards.

McDavid talk, trade Matthews to Anaheim for McTavish and Leo Carlsson, give Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand whatever contracts they want. Total fantasyland.

Elliotte Friedman mentioned the idea of the Leafs signing Marchand on today's 32 Thoughts podcast.

Looks like Marner is clutch only when he dons the Canada sweater. Let his contract be someone else’s problem. Brutal playoffs from the guy. Just get two of Provorov, Ekblad and Gavrikov; Boeser and Ehlers. Then shed some of our vets, Miller Jr and Laffy for picks.

I wonder how much interest Marner will draw from contending teams.
I think it'll come from teams who believe he can make them a contender.
Only just turned 28, 100 pt season, 4 +ppg seasons in a row. And despite the lack of goals, and the narrative, he has gone at more than ppg in 3 of the last 4 post seasons.

Someone is stumping up some serious cash for him, he'll likely just need to decide which he wants more between location and maximum $$

Yah, that's my thought, a middle of the pack team with the cap room that's got aspirations. It's gonna be money over glory. I think he accepts dollars over maybe missing the post season.

I agree who knows how things turn out if Stolarz doesn't get hurt.

They need Berube type players in their top 6; none of the players you listed above are top 6 players on a contending team; outside of maybe Domi, but even that is a stretch. They're hard to get, I know.

Teams that I think will go hard after Marner
Chicago
Columbus
Utah

I think a smaller market would be great for him personally too. I’m kind of hoping for Columbus. It would be a good story and I think he would actually fit in really well with what they have going on.
