Around the NHL - Part XLV (Playoffs edition)

Teams that I think will go hard after Marner
Chicago
Columbus
Utah

I think a smaller market would be great for him personally too. I’m kind of hoping for Columbus. It would be a good story and I think he would actually fit in really well with what they have going on.
The thing is, if you're Marner you ask yourself the question: am I trying cash out? or am I trying to win a cup? Anaheim's owner made some sort of statement with the Q hiring like "it's time to spend and it's time to win" so they can open their purse for Marner if he's signing with whoever can pay the most. Chicago definitely fits that description as well. From what little I've seen of Marner's personality, he does have more of a SoCal vibe to him. Carolina have Orlov and Burns coming off the cap so they'll have money to throw. I feel like their management took a black eye with the Raantanen saga. More so if the Stars can beat them in the finals. A lot of teams will be in the Marner sweeps.

Cap percentage would be the better way to look at this, but I agree with the conclusion.

That said, an interesting thing to see here is that it looks like the importance of depth may have actually increased a little over time, given those cap hits. Could just be a fluke of the numbers, given the small sample, but it's been 16 years since a >13% cap hit was on a winning team. And five of the seven winners before that each had a 14 or 15% cap hit player.

Marner and his father have been all about the money in the past. We'll see if that's changed, but I suspect he's going to end up going to the highest bidder.
Thats a mistake imo. Money is important but not everything. Id rather live and play where I wanted since he will probably make at least $10 mill a year wherever he ends up.

Preach. I took a complete change in industry and about a 25% initial pay cut to move to where I wanted to be.

Maybe at this point in his career, he'll be more open to picking out situations over paychecks; he has to be at least somewhat exhausted by the media scrutiny in Toronto.

the Tavares signing was their version of the Panarin signing. It didn't make sense when it happened and in retrospect was not a good move. It was hilarious because Islander fans flipped a shit but it just never really addressed anything that Toronto needed addressed. They had the offensive core that they needed, they didn't need to add another big name to that (contrast to the Rangers who had no names, but needed to figure out wtf they had before adding a big name.)
That's a huge contrast between Leafs bringing Tavares vs Rangers signing Panarin. From the start (or near it) Tavares became Leafs 4th offensive talent option where Panarin was and is it's most offensively talented player. Cumulatively Panarin delivered more to the Rangers when Tavares to the Leafs.

Yeah I said as much.

Both were dumb signings that didn’t make sense at the time and did not pay off in the end. Different reasons, same end result.

One or more of them could be nursing injuries.

Yup, or just in need of a well-earned break. Zibanejad just never wanted to attend optional skates.

There's mountains of circumstantial evidence that our culture is garbage. Anybody who rails against how much that matters now is never going to change their opinion.

The media scrutiny? Lol, Toronto is pretty tame at that. There is volume, but not the ferocity. He might be exhausted to play in the market overall though. Listened to the Steve Dangle podcast from yesterday and they told stories where people were coming to dump their garbage on his yard after one playoff loss lol. And some nastier stuff too.
