Around the NHL - Part XLV (Playoffs edition)

Imo for the rangers it’s a factor of playing fast rather than not physically being able to keep up. Granted we need to get faster as a team. But on defense we have guys who can skate. There’s also youthful vigor that was severely underutilized by the last 2 coaching staffs. The core guys (the ones who have played the PP mostly) are the ones who try to slow the game down when that’s not what wins in the league anymore. Changes need to be made there personnel wise and mindset wise.

For me it isn’t just trying to slow the game down. It’s playing with pace. It’s the intensity on the forecheck and the puck recoveries in the corners, even on the PP with the extra man. Are you going in to the corner to kill the other guy rather than let them clear and have to reset or are you coasting into the corner and waiving a stick? I just don’t see this team having it, personnel wise. 2-3 years ago, a bit younger, a bit more vigor from the most important guys? We were in the mix. Zib, Kreider, Bread just aren’t moving fast enough or working hard enough to be in that conversation now. Did you catch any of the last DAL/COL or EDM/LAK games? I literally don’t think I’ve watched one NYR game with that pace and intensity since 2014.

Agree with all of it. It’s why I like the Sullivan hire. His rosters haven’t been good but they’ve always been high pace teams. It’s a good start to change the rotten culture. Emphasis on hard forechecks we haven’t seen since with the Rangers since the early AV years

Or, goalies aren’t worth paying at all. Watch Edmonton make the finals with Pickard in net.
Give me another team with McDavid and Dri at forward… oh, wait..

PS. Helle really gives bad rep to top goalies. Vasi hasn’t had a strong playoff in awhile too.

You don't need a top goalie to win a cup. You do need good goaltending to win the cup (Colorado in 2022 is the outlier). And when you pay a good goalie, you are more likely to get that good goaltending.

I would much rather pay Shesterkin that 11.5M dollars, if the alternative is the Edmonton model and try to hope that a guy like Pickard or Skinner gets hot. Because more likely than not, they will not get hot and it will cost them a series.

Obviously, ideally you find something in the middle. A good goalie for 6-7M dollars is starting to be the norm now.

Good goaltending (especially good playoff goaltending) is kind of like good health. Its not a big thing until you don't have it. Once you don't have it, it becomes the most important thing. ☺️

A good goalie is going to be a top 20 goalie in the league. There’s just only so many starting jobs. The margin between #3 and #20 is way thinner than the margin between C #3 and #20.

Right now:

Stolarz
Pickard
Lindgren
Hill
Bobrovsky (36 year old)
Andersson
Binnington/Hellebuyck
Blackwood/Oetinger

If Colorado and St. Louis advance, Bob is the only big name goalie in the second round. Hellebuyck, Oetinger, Markstrom, Ullmark, Vasilevsky will all be out in round one.

Winnipeg power play looking good even without Scheifele. Just basic ass movement and circling the zone and working it down low every time the PK cheats up high. It’s not that complicated
So what you're saying is your power play QB shouldn't be stationary standing there with a bad attitude therefore making the entire PP stationary? Quick someone get on the phone.

Coronato gets a 7/45 extension with a year still to go on his ELC for no real reason, Be A GM seals clap at the savvy incineration of money for a deal that would have been available next year.

I would think it's difficult to get an American player to commit to playing in Calgary long term.
