Around the NHL - Part XLV (Playoffs edition)

depth is the name of the game. Also those guys arent as bad as Skinner lol. Binnington is actually secretly god tier in big games.

But yeah, any teambuilding strategy is better than the Rongos strategy of having an all world goalie, a few really good players and then 9 plumbers
C'mon the 2019 Blues are the RNG Cup, stop defending it. It's ok that a bad team won the Cup once, it doesn't ruin the sport.

And they still won with a lousy goaltender!

Anyone want to play NHL 16 with created teams?

Was kind of hoping they were going to keep Utah HC. I don't normally like that naming style for sports teams, but as a one-off in the league, it was pretty cool.

Two-off with Montreal's French name, I guess.

outside of McDrai they have some guys like Hyman and Perry who can score playoff-type greasy goals.

From Game 3-end of series, they really kicked the shit out of the Kings who were a top 3 team analytically this year.

They allowed like 9 shots 5v5 to Vegas yesterday (off night perhaps, but thats impressive and a carry over of what was happening once they got going in the previous series.)

The sample size is 7 games (really 5 games) but they've looked better than basically every other team playing and thats with no goaltending or Ekholm. LA and Vegas are very good teams so it's not like they just beefed up their numbers against the Habs (who didn't belong) or Devils (who weren't very good and then became very injured.)

Vegas is more than capable of coming back and winning this series but what the Oilers are doing on the ice isn't really computing with me. It's not that they out producing their performance, it's that they're dominating way more than they should be even when McDraisaitl aren't on the ice.

Here's an exchange worth listening to (re: Rantannen)

Definition of a galaxy brain.

For all of those people who were screaming about how it was smart for a contender to sell a pending UFA, look at how stupid that looks now. I give MacK credit, he was obviously pissed and blindsided when it happened but he didn't pout and let it tear apart the room.

But he was clearly steamed once they got knocked out. That GM isn't going to be around much longer.

Their GM gave up real assets for Ryan Lindgren. Worse than any deadline deal we've made by a country mile

Interesting that Miko Rantanan was bashed by so many people while on Carolina (and after the 4 Nations Tourney) but now he is being praised as a hero by so many people. It was not just a playoff fluke either. The guy has always been a big time playoff performer. He has raised his game in the playoffs for most his career.

He got knocked down by Zib in the 4 Nations never forget

Leafs have great own zone D structure so far. They always have a guy patrolling the goal line to prevent the puck from getting into the slot if it squirts out of the corner. They also have a third guy follow the puck up the boards supporting the guys on the wall and being there for the short exit pass or providing a layer if they lose the board battle.

It’s almost like they have an elite roster and coaching staff.
