Pretty sure he signed as a free agent. When a team gets into the top echelon of teams it gets harder and harder to keep all the components together because of cap compliance. It's also why Florida had to move on from Montour and Ekman-Larsson. Taxes are one thing but a team still has to work within the parameters of the cap unless you're Vegas.
