Rangers messed up by not drafting him. I wonder how that bust is doing 🤬

Make the Rangers draft better again. Imagine if the Rangers can make great picks like Stepan and Dubinsky again
Rangers have never been good at drafting. When they were finding Dubinsky and Stepan in the 2nd they were blowing 1st rounders on Al Montoya and Dylan McIlrath

Meanwhile, Anaheim has like 2-3 major busts (is 19 OA even in serious bust category?) in the last 20 years, and many of their underwhelming players, they've been timely with trading them for big assets a la Kilger + Tverdovsky for Selanne or Etem + Lupul for Pronger.

OT the rails fell off in ANA when they decided to not invest in the insane D-core of Lindholm, Theodore, Manson, Montour, Fowler. Funny how many of those players have won cups. Keeping Vantanen in the expansion draft was such a big mistake. They even had Marcus Pettersson circa that era and traded him away for Sprong. And these days, they have Solberg, Mintyukov, Zellweger, Lacombe.

More mad we took McIlrath over Fowler than Lindbolm over Drury. Rangers going off the board never goes well.

He hasn’t earned it but it’s an easy projection to see he can outproduce it.
So you lock him into a number that he hasn’t earned but will out produce anyways.

This way he takes it.
If you squeeze someone for every dollar then they’re gonna do the same.
Its not squeezing for every dollar; its the difference of dollars in the projection, which the Rangers would do well to manage as thats how you get better deals

I dont think 8x8 for Lafreniere, with the cap rising, is a bad contract. Its just not. But at this very moment the Rangers would do best to try and get him at 8x7m because thats better value

Is he really going to risk an injury-riddled year to make an extra 8m when he'll sign another large deal, if his projections are correct, at 29-30? You may be able to get him for that - just as NJ got Hughes at 8 and Hischier at 7

I'd say that's a little extreme. They've been good to very good at drafting several times in my life. They've been finding NHL talent just fine especially post-2004 lockout.

The issue is anytime they've made a mistake it's been fatal, and they haven't found their positional grand slam since Zubov. If they can get one for this core, they'll probably win a Cup.

Well, yeah. I don't think it's the Rangers' fault or the Lightning's savy drafting that is the difference but sheer luck.
Let’s remember how close they got to trading Stamkos before he even had a chance to play half season in his first year (at least based on reports I remember).

Sprong had been mentioned here as a possible Rangers target:

As said in the other thread, Lav didn't like his game when he was in DC.

That regime did some quirky things. They're gone now.

Sprong really isn't that good. He can put up points but he doesn't know what defense is. Apparently all the GM's where thinking that too.
