I agree. We already lost 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 11 and 35. If we use standards like this, we will retire 5 (Girardi), 10 (Gaborik), 18 (Staal), 24 (Callahan), 27 (McDonagh) and 30 (Lundqvist) before 2020.
Retiring numbers should be done for players who really contributed to the Rangers over a longer period of time. I still don't get why no. 11 was retired for Messier. I am grateful for his services which brought us a Stanley Cup, but he was not a Ranger legend like Leetch, Howell or Richter.
The only player at this moment who might come close to deserving his number being retired is Lundqvist. Maybe Girardi if he plays another 8 or 10 years for us.
IMO, retired numbers should be left for elite players that have spent their whole careers, or majority of their career with that one team. Graves, Messie and, Richter is a joke. Especially for original 6 franchise.

Graves is a legend here, on and off the ice. Not to mention, 9 would of and should have been gone besides Graves. Might as well retire 11. Nobody would have worn 11 in NY Blue anyway. Same with 35. No issues with the retired numbers. Of the group they have now, it will be #30 next. Nobody else, as of yet, has distinguished themselves to be of that level. Team is too young to have those type of questions.
I agree with all of this. Especially the last part. As much as I love the players on this team, only Hank will have his number up there. Honestly, I believe he will be one of the greatest Rangers of all time by the time he's done.

Not a fan of having Graves' 9 retired, but Bathgate's is retired anyway, so whatever. Otherwise, every number retired is deserved. Last complaint is that 19 is not hanging up there...it's a travesty.
Regarding today's team, only 30 should be retired as of now. He will break every Rangers goal tending record. Some of the defensemen may have a shot, but they're going to have to play their entire careers here and open up their offense a bit, which is tough to gauge. Only way 24 has a chance of going up there is if we win multiple cups under his captaincy.

Messier was only elite for a period of 4 years with the Rangers.
The fact that we are justifying Graves' for his actions off the ice speaks volumes on why it's a joke his number is up there.
Richter only 3 all star appearances, no major individual hardware, it's like EDM retiring Ranford's number or DRW retiring Osgood's number.
The Rangers should honor these players for sure, but not in terms of jersey retirement imo.

This is a bad hockey team.
This franchise's futility over the years shouldn't be overlooked as a factor. Members of the 1994 team will be held in higher regard because of this.

So damn fast.
He has been here forever it seems and I always recall him as a heart and soul guy. He's only 25 and has been a regular fixture on the bottom 6 of elite, grinding teams, Boston and St. Louis. A player that everyone would love to have on their team.

Messier is #5 all-time in NY Rangers history in points.
Richter doesn't deserve it? #1 in wins.
#19 should be in the rafters, yes. Ratelle absolutely deserves it. Greschner's #4 also deserves it.
But the REAL travesty is that there is nowhere near enough respect paid towards the original real greats.
Bill Cook, Fred Cook, Frank Boucher, Ivan Johnson, Ott Heller, Bryan Hextall.
Those guys should be in the rafters. Overlapping numbers should be shared.
Every one of those guys, with the exception of Hextall, won two Stanley Cups. Hextall won one, in 1940. One of them, Boucher, won three. Two as a player and one as GM/Coach.
And its not just the Cups, either. Those guys were greats in the NHL.

I will say this; the Blackhawks are providing the Rangers a wonderful blueprint for how to do a salary-cap-forced retooling of the team after next year. Let's just make sure we do as they did and grab a Cup before 2014-15 hits!
BTW... they also have a Slovak named Marian that they decided to keep aboard despite him hitting his 30s, and he's still a pretty important part of team
That's right but Marian Hossa is head and shoulders a better all around player than Marian Gaborik is. So if his goal scoring slows down at some juncture, it won't matter as much to the Hawks because he does so many other things well whereas Gaborik is a "one trick pony" meaning if his goal production falls off, he becomes not that important to the Rangers!
He had more assists last year than anyone not named Richards.
More than Stepan, Callahan, Hagelin, Del Zotto, etc.

I don't see the Rangers raising the # of a player who granted is blood and guts, heart and soul but will be hard pressed to reach 200 goals in his career not when the #'s of Ratelle, Cook, Park and Greschner have yet to be retired and the lousy organization waited 35+ yrs to retire Bathgate and Howell's #'s!!
