How dreadful the Devils have been is really an indictment on the Rangers.
They have 9 even strength goals in 9 games. As bad as the Rangers were, they outscored the Devils 11-7 at 5v5.
The entire top six is a no show. Only Hughes has done anything at all and even he doesn't have a goal in five.
People were right that this team isn't ready for the playoffs.
I don't think it's because they can't do the tuffnuss or whatever. I think they're actually going out of their way to do it too much. They have speed and skill all over the lineup and all they're doing is hitting.
Meier should spend less time being dollar store Sean Avery and more time getting a point. I can understand wanting physicality in the playoffs but when all it gets you is 0 points and your face broken in half, maybe stick to your game.

And now the Devils falling apart will be made all about goaltending while they win with you and I as a tandem if they play their game.
There's a path here to the Devils shooting themselves in the ass with this great roster and I hope they take it.

I was wondering the same thing, but I don't think Conn Smythe voting results are shared. In 2002 Peter Forsberg led the NHL in playoff scoring but the Avs lost in the conference finals. Playoff MVP went to Lidstrom.

Don't know if there were actual votes but I remember there being noise about Karlsson in 2017 and McDavid last year.
I would have been fine with Karlsson getting it in 2017 tbh. And the Stanley Cup. Not the Senators. Just him. Stanley Cup Champion Erik Karlsson. Give him a wrestling belt. What a wretched season of NHL hockey that was. Literally no team was good.

Don't get me wrong, less 4th liners doing nothing is good and yours truly would be playing a lot of 9/6 at even strength in the playoffs, but it upsets the pairs and more guys playing such a hard position is inherently a diminishing return.
If you want to play a differet defenseman, just play him. If your starting six were that good that none of them can come out, you wouldn't be playing a different one.
