They sure paid the top price based off of one 40-goal 63-point year. The success of this contract is not only contingent on Skinner's continued goal scoring, increased point production but also Sabres' team success.

For a team that has trouble scoring goals, it'd be a pretty tough sell to let 40 of them walk out the door over "just cap space" as people around here like to say.

Skinner contract is fine and pretty much what I would have figured. Anyone saying “lol 63 point career high” is just ignoring that in his time in Carolina he was often on the second PP unit and was in the 16-17 min range. He’s really good. From a Rangers perspective I would not have given him that but I think it’s fine relative to the market and I’d certainly prefer Skinner at his deal to say Brock Nelson at his.

In other news the 8 year bonus to resign strikes once again further indicating why FA classes have been poor under this CBA for the most part.

Boston not only losing, but losing on goals where the Blues take legit penalties is...amazing.

I hope the Blues cup winning goal is the sketchiest of all time. I want those Boston tears.

I'm surprised by all the surprise around the Skinner contract.
Not surprised. It just seems like a big overpriced by $1M? Skinner has never eclipsed 63 pts in a season and even riding shotgun with Eichel, that's all he could muster. He's still 27 so maybe he's got a lot to prove still and will deliver. I feel like Skinner is good for 30+ goals a season. This isn't crazy like when Buffalo went crazy and gave Leino 6 year 4.5 AAV only after one good 50 pt season. He has a decent track record and he's there to keep Eichel company and give Buffalo a top line. It's just $9M for someone who has never eclipsed 63 points seems overpriced. Maybe that's just called "extending in Buffalo tax?" I could be a New York state tax thing too.

I look at it like Mark Stone, 33 goals 40 assists 73 points 9.5M AAV - man was deadly in the playoffs.
Jeff Skinner, 40 goals 23 assists, 63 points. 9M AAV - In the end, I guess it's the 40 goals that does it but comparing those two contracts, Mark Stone looks like the more attractive bargain.

Anyone else watch the postgame on NHL Network last night? Rupp tore apart Cassidy and some of the players for whining and blaming the refs for losing the game while they continue to roll out and defend Marchand every night

Edit: took me a second to find, but here it is
The thing is...accidental trips are allowed. The ref didn't miss anything, he was looking right at the play, and chose not to call a penalty. Does that mean he made the right choice? No, but the reasoning is right there in the rulebook (Tripping.) Bozak didn't stick his leg out or kick anything, he was stopping. Acciari going full-banana-peel probably didn't help.

Rupp is right though, this is Boston's M.O. They're a greasy team, have been for years (albeit not as "tough" as they were ~five years ago), and then there is outrage when the shoe is on the other foot.

Agreed with especially the last part. Boston fans and players should be the last ones to be surprised by this not being called. As Rupp said, Marchand stomping on Atkinson's stick, Krug skating around like a maniac hitting whatever he finds in his path. And nothing gets called.

Kadri gets suspended against them, Sundqvist gets suspended against them. Has a Bruins player been suspended for a questionable hit yet?

I cannot remember a free agent contract that this board felt was a) wasn’t too much money and b) going to be a mess in a few years.

In this case, I strongly agree with the prevailing opinion. Terrible, terrible contract.

8 years at $9 mil per and it looks like it's all NMC. He's 27 and he's had numerous concussions. He had at the very least 4 by 2014 and probably another in 2017 when he was out for a 'stiff neck' upper body injury. It may go well for two or three years but the back end of this I'm thinking will almost certainly be a disaster.

Panarin by the way doesn't have the injury history--he hasn't come close to a 40 goal year but he can drive a team's offense much better than Skinner who depends a lot more on others and in the case of the Sabres--he depends a whole lot on Jack Eichel.

I'm not a fan of the Sabres organization and I'm fine with them doing this. He's not a player that I was very interested in. He's all theirs now for better or worse and in sickness and in health.

I don't really think his injury history is a big deal. He's missed 3 games total the last four years and 19 total the last 6. If you go back far enough everyone has some sort of injury history. He also scored at a very similar rate with and without Eichel this year. Almost an identical goal rate and less assists without him (fairly obvious that his assists would go down when playing with someone like Evan Rodrigues instead of Jack Eichel)

Holy Shit what a collection of dirty trips. I counted 4 or 5 where he seriously tried to blow the guys knee out. Look at the Brassard hit. How Brassard didn't blow out his entire right knee is beyond me. It's just disgusting not only ruining someones career but also debilitating them later in their life.
