A few random thoughts.

I feel like these two games today really highlight what we have seen all playoffs and they really support Gorton's idea to build a bigger more physical team.

Milbury should not be in the booth for any game let alone a Bruins game. You hear his disappointment when CBJ scores. Why is NBC so attached to him.

As others have mentioned. Panarin is good. I am not sure how to proceed. I'll need to see how the draft shakes out.

Milbury and Matt Millen need to teach a seminar on how to fail as a GM and secure a better job as a result.

Doc is on another streak thinking he’s on radio with the 88 words per minute describing every single moment. Ugh.

What are the chances of us signing Panarin this summer? How much would he cost? Adding him, Kakko, and Kravtsov would be amazing.

He'll cost minimum of $11 mill per for 6 and it will be well worth it. We need someone like Panaren to help accelerate the rebuild. He's actually the perfect guy. He's still young..27...still in his prime and he'll make our offense that much more dangerous.

As far as our chances, I give it 60-40 with Florida being our main competition. The fact NY has a thriving Russian community, the fact it's NYC and the fact we are pretty much poised to start becoming a contender within the next year or two, hopefully will be enough to make the Breadman turn away state tax free Florida and Queneville. We'll see but I like our chances...

Stone just got $9.5m. Similar stats. I just don’t see $11m

I hear ya and kind of agree tho I do think Panaren is a better player and can do more than Stone. That said, we are going to have to add a mill or two to make up for the no state tax in Florida which is where I got the 11 mill.

Panarin 1.0 PPG vs. .83 for Stone. $11M seems right.

Stone is a better all around player but you'd have to factor in for the tax break he gets in Vegas so 10.5-11 is reasonable.

Still, people need to expect him to end up in Florida, which unless hes fixated on NY has more to offer him than we do. We shouldn't be sniffing around for high end UFA's this summer unless we can snag one of the top centers out of this draft in addition to Kakko.

Can I just say that I hate the term "accelerate the rebuild."

To me that implies trading some of the young assets for more immediate players, not signing a relatively young free agent for cash only.

Trading a bunch of younger players and assets for Nash was acceleration. Signing Gaborik wasn't.

When I said "accelerate the rebuild", you'll notice I never once said trade assets....yes? All I said was signing a stud like Panaren for just cash would be accelerating it. So where exactly is the hate coming from? lol

If we get Panarin (which I've made clear I don't think will happen nor should we) of course I'm going to root like hell for him and he'd be exciting to have. But, I think it's just a poor allocation of resources.

It is true that Panarin has relatively low mileage, has been healthy.etc. This doesn't mean he's immune from declining or busting or becoming injured, but it does make him a lesser risk, and it'd be bad faith to suggest he's the same as a Brad Richards.etc. Still, 7 years at 77M is an incredible investment to make in a position that is both a non-premium position and one that we have an organizational strength at. We have Kakko, Buch, Kravtsov, Chytil, and then Andersson, Lemieux in a tier below.

If there was a Panarin-esque player (meaning the same level of eliteness, lack of mileage, durability concerns.etc) on defense available, I'd be much more sympathetic towards splurging. Especially if he was a RD. We have a lot of prospects on defense, but none that are currently sure things. They aren't even close to the same likelihood of success as our our forward prospects.

Kakko is a franchise level prospect, and the rest in my list (minus Kravtsov, who played against men) are already in the NHL. On D, Miller is probably our best bet for an elite/very very good player, but all he has had so far is a very good D+1 in college. Not yet playing against men.

Accordingly, there is a very high likelihood that we'll need to acquire a top d-man externally when the time comes to chase the cup. If Kakko and Kravtsov work out (which is probably going to be necessary for us to succeed, with or without Panarin), I don't want 11M per year for Panarin as a third quality to stop us for splurging on an elite d-man, especially when those tend to be much harder to find.

It's not a lot for us now, but it may be when we have to (hopefully) pay guys like Kakko, Kravtsov.et al in addition this theoretical stud defender. Or even a stud center if we go d-heavy in this/next draft after Kakko.

You mean via draft position?

No..not really. What I'm implying is that if we take the prospects we've accumulated the past two years plus what we will add at the draft this summer with the huge huge huge Kakko addition, if we sign Panaren, that IMO would accelerate our rebuild the point that I think we'd be capable of potentially making the playoffs as a bubble type team this upcoming season and by 2021 with some more tinkering and more development from our prospects, we should be ready to be bonafide contenders in the Eastern Conference.

We would be on our way to being Cup contenders going forward. That's what I mean by Panaren accelerating the rebuild.

I disagree. Nash was traded for fresh off of an almost presidents trophy season and a trip to the conference finals.

That was a "get us over the hump" move. The issue is we killed our depth in the process (we made up for it with the moves at the deadline.)

As a base, I think we're better now than we were then despite being where we are (There was no Zibanejad or Kakko on the team or in the system) but we need to be really careful about when we start adding these high priced players.

Low.
7/$87.5M (12.5/yr) would probably do it.
it'd be good but NYR still have a bottom 5 C situation itl

I'm really digging Torts' pullover over shirt and tie look, making it a three piece suit

Yeah, we were absolutely not rebuilding when we traded for Nash. That's crazy. Like you said, we lost in 6 in the ECF, and almost won the Presidents, and signed Brad Richards to be our #1 the year before.

Jagr was an accelerate the rebuild move, despite us spending no assets to get him (sorry Anson). And, he got us to the playoffs year one of the acceleration. He's not as young as Panarin, but was far better, and we required less of a commitment to him.
