Pick #58.

The Rangers had two opportunities to get a 2nd #1 pick out of that trade. TB couldn't get it done.

Maybe Gorton can use #58 to move up.

Yea, I get the feeling that one-sided skill can net you a lot of wins during the regular season when teams can't strategize/prepare as well for it. But during the playoffs, you need more balance.

100%. I think Toronto is going to run into the same problem. There is a reason why Babcock wanted more grit in his lineup.

OTOH, I don't think people are giving Columbus enough credit. They've been great and look like they're on their way to possibly pulling some 2012 LA Kings type shit.

If Tampa gets bounced, can we factor that into the conversations about Stevie Y?

Not saying he hasn’t done some good things, but that whole genius label might be just a wee bit overstated.
There are things he’s done that have been really good. But there are also some moves that have been average and questionable. But overall, I think he’s done a very good job. I wouldn’t call him a genius, but he was one of the top GMs in the league. I still think Poile is/was better than him, though. Luck has more to do with this stuff than we think, and Tampa is lucky with the lower taxes and all.

I still think he's a great evaluator of talent who can add a lot to a team. He can't coach and captain them.

Cooper has never won anything and Stamkos is a cottonball.

I think he’s great at surrounding himself with those who can identify young talent via the draft.

His ability to identify winning NHL talent is still unproven to me, as his ability to identify leaders for said talent.

So right now, based on that description, he reads like a great assistant who could oversee a team’s scouting department and player development.

But that description does not genius GM or team president make.

Completely agreed, I hope this is going to be exciting franchise defining playoff run for the blue jackets.

I've developed a deep appreciation for Josh Anderson.

Josh Anderson is really really tough--so are Seth Jones and Nick Foligno. There's a lot of grit there and Anderson and Foligno are bad choices to drop the gloves with. Foligno's still a good but declining player. Anderson is a very good player. Combining tough with good is not so easy these days.

One would hope that Lemieux gets better because it's important to have players like that. The Rangers could use more but they need to be able to play and contribute in other areas.

Nobody in his right mind would have predicted tampa being down 3-0 especially after they were up 3-0 in game 1 at home. Heads are going to roll. I really did want their 1st rounder and thought they had the best chance to win the cup.

This series is making me think maybe Kakko is the better player than Hughes to build a contender

I think this series highlights the importance of balance. For the NYR, Kakko may be the better player towards a skill/grit balance.

For a team with minimal offensive talent, I can see why you'd prefer Hughes over Kakko.

Think about all the postseason games Crosby and Malkin have played as well. They have a ton of miles on them.

It's becoming more of a struggle for them to make the playoffs. Their depth has weakened and their better players are getting older. Their window for a Stanley Cup is closed. They've traded off a shitload of draft picks in the last few years but they've kind of made up a bit with some shrewd college free agent signings like Guentzel, Sheary and Aston-Reese. Their day of reckoning is on the horizon--it might be a year or two still but they don't really have a whole lot of top end talent in their system.

As a player I thought Yzerman wasn’t necessarily a guy you won with unless he had a ton of help.

The first 12 years of his career gave birth to that concept. The results after Detroit added a HOF coach, and a short bus full of HOF players confirmed it for me though.

And now here we are with him as an executive, with his success owing a lot to the work of those who “support” him.

Steve Yzerman's Red Wings teams couldn't win for a while. They lost some brutal playoff series in the early 1990's before they won. Scotty Bowman wanted to trade Yzerman. Mike Illitch didn't want his captain to be traded. One rumor was Yzerman to Ottawa for Yashin.

1991-92 lost to Chicago
1992-93 lost to Toronto
1993-94 lost to San Jose
1995 lost to New Jersey
1995-96 lost to Colorado

The Wings were the favorites in all of those playoff series.

They finally broke through against Philadelphia in a series the Flyers were the favorites.

Very similar to the TB teams.

This is kind of how I feel: he’s a guy with a lot of good connections, but he’s also a guy that forced a riff with probably the best player in their history to that point, and who let problems between Cooper and Stamkos get to the point of Stamkos almost walking for nothing
