It disgusts me that players like Tom Wilson are still employed by the NHL. Ironically the people that love players like him are the ones that are most likely to criticize Lias for throwing away his silver medal because of class.

Really? I mean I like tough hockey. I don't like Tom Wilson though because he's a vicious and dirty player. A bigger, meaner, tougher version of Matt Cooke. A head shot artist and IMO the NHL was right to give him 20 games because he hasn't gotten the f***ing message after 3 suspensions (and probably what could have been 5 or 6) last year. I just don't see the connection between liking tough hockey and criticizing Lias for tossing his medal. That's going to take some explaining on your part. I had 0 problem with what Lias did last year at the WJC. I admired his display of not accepting 2nd best. He played those last two games with a separated shoulder and still scored a goal. To me that's moxie and that's toughness and I expect that when Lias is with us he is going to play a tough brand of hockey (though I don't think there will be very many fights--maybe even almost none) for us.

Anyhow I think Wilson is now on notice from the league that there is going to be 0 tolerance for his deliberately trying to injure players. If he continues to throw hits like he did against Sundqvist he is going to be looking at 20--20+ game suspensions. The league is finally getting him right. It's up to him to figure it out or he's going to turn himself into one of his own victims.

The connection is that it seems old school hockey fans are the types that like the type of shit Tom Wilson does and also are the ones that preach about class and killed Lias over the medal thing.

This guy is going to be a stud...

and to think we were literally ONE pick away from getting him

It feels really bad when players don`t make the team and the 1 pick away having a great start of his NHL career like Elias. However the new coaching staff kept Lias with mediocre line m8`s and borderline nhl players in this camp, and AV did the same and used him on his 4th line. Maybe we expect too much from Lias concerning his talent level, and how much scouts missed on him concerning their evaluations as a 7th pick?

Karlsson to San Jose To me is not going to work. That guy needs to be a number one. Sharing big spots with Burns is not going to work. He needs to be the guy somewhere.

I am old school hockey though. I've been following the Rangers since 1971-72 so I've seen different versions of what the NHL is and nothing ever stays the same forever and it may be when you've watched the Rangers for 47 years that some knucklehead comes along and calls you a throwback because of some ideas that you've carried along that are not so popular anymore.

I also played for quite a number of years--not anything super special but even so I can tell you this--guys who run around with reckless disregard for others are a menace and I don't buy the crap that players aren't afraid of those kinds of players because you'd be nuts not to and because if necessary you can't let them do whatever or you might as well just stop playing altogether so now and again I'd have some run-in and now and again I'd have to take things a notch further than I was really comfortable with--and the mindset then that if someone's really going to get hurt it's going to be him--not me. I don't like seeing someone running around trying to injure me--but there are the odd yahoo's almost everywhere.

Wilson is that kind of guy. Gudas is another.

But no I don't believe it's a good thing to blindside someone and especially to the head or take them out at the knees. You should play hard but you should have some respect for your opponent. Hard stand up hits though are fine to me. Two guys--more than less equal dropping the gloves I'm fine with that too.

Yes I actually share a similar view this time @Kovalev27 on point. :)

He played 20:46 5v5, 26:48 overall. Top PK pairing, almost every PP minute they had (two full PPs and then almost all of the third). He and Burns basically only shared the ice on the PP where Burns can be the shooter to Karlsson's QB (like Zib and Shatty).

It would be one thing if his TOI got slashed, but he was clearly their #1 in all situations in the first game.

Smart of WPG to put Laine on Perreault's wing. MP drives possession like few, but doesn't score anymore. Laine scores without even trying, but is a possession nightmare. Last night they put up 68% possession, no 5v5 goals though. It'll be interesting to see how that line unfolds.

Being old school doesn't mean that you love that kind of player. Just that people like that kind of player tend to be more old school, same with people obsessed with the meaningless show of class.

One thing that is different from 45 years ago and now is that people understand more about the long term effects of head injuries--and even if the NHL denies it. I don't really want to see someone permanently damaged for the playing a game that they love--even if playing that game puts them in a tax bracket well above my own. So that certainly factors differently into the way I look at the game now--and that's why in particular guys like Wilson bug me. They must know what they're doing can cause permanent problems unless they're complete imbeciles or just don't care. Winning should not be that important that you should continually try to harm others like that but hey at least some teams are looking for guys just like him.

Anyway I don't live under a rock even if he does and even if the Capitals continue to employ him and not correct his head targeting or even if the NHL continues to deny that these injuries are any responsibility of theirs. As a fan who likes rough hockey it's a bit of a balancing act for me and I can't claim that I'm entirely consistent all the time....but I'm trying.
