Around the NHL II - 11/8: Oilers Go Insane.

You always have to be extremely cautious with a potential neck break.

I remember going in as a teen to the doctor after a collision and having him ask me to rotate my head in every direction. Once I'd done it, he said something to the effect of "Well, we know your neck isn't broken, otherwise you'd be dead now"
 
Jeez I hope he's relatively alright. I feel like there's been noticeably more injuries this year, is it the year of the snake or something? Probably just me.

Their PP wasn't very good last season either. It was slightly better than the Rangers last season (15.8% to 15.7%).

Some people said the Rangers PP sucked because the team had no talent. The VAN PP missed Ryan Kesler last season. Vigneault and his assistant in Vancouver(Newell Brown)share the same philosophy. Right-handed shots. Brown is an assistant with the Coyotes now.

"When you're trying to run a power play with five left shots, which we were forced to do a lot this year, you're really swimming upstream. Seventy-seven per cent of the power-play goals are scored with at least two right shots, so that tells you a lot right there. Not to say there are exceptions to the rule, but when you have five left shots, or even four, your chances of scoring are diminished.

“Teams are so fast to get into the shot lanes these days,” Brown continued, “that if you can't take one-timers, if you aren't in position to take one-touch passes and move the puck quickly to shooters and shoot off the pass, you're at a big disadvantage. That was something we were dealing with this year.”

During the 2010-11 campaign, Brown had righties Sami Salo, Mikael Samuelsson and a healthy Ryan Kesler plus heavy-shooting lefty Christian Ehrhoff. Salo, Samuelsson and Ehrhoff were not around this season and Kesler was hurt for most of it.

“You know, it's funny,” Brown said. “When Ryan Kesler was in the lineup, our power play was at 22 per cent. I'm sure if we would have stayed healthy, we would have finished in the top 10. That's what makes these types of seasons a real challenge. So there are lots of things we can look at but the bottom line, and you hear it repeatedly, is it's a results-oriented business. That's why we're in the situation we're in right now.”

Kesler played 17 games last season. He is healthy this season. The PP stinks. The two architects in NY are now in Vancouver. What's their excuse for the bad PP? Maybe they don't what they are doing. They don't share the right handed philosophy which is what Vigneault has brought to the Rangers.

The Rangers are down to one righty(Stepan)with the injury to Callahan. The Rangers need to add more righty shots.
 
It almost seemed like the Oilers didn't want to score on that 5 vs 3 (brutal dive by Petry), but a strong kill by the Senators nonetheless.
 
Just goes to show, again, a big shot does not make a PP. I used to watch Vancouver's PP in awe. Inexcusable with that group of players. Our PP is 14th right now at an even 20%. That's without Nash for half the games. Will probably drop without Callahan, though. Maybe Hagelin can play PP under AV.
 
Anyone see Seth Jones' goal against Montreal? What a stud. Kid will be a superstar.

He was my favorite player from last years draft (doesn't mean I think he'll be the best though). The kid is going to be so good. He's not flashy, but he just has a nose for the game. He's been impressive for sure.

This season's group of rookies has been very impressive so far this season.

I've seen Monahan play, and nothing flashy about him, just simple good skills. He follows plays and goes to the net. Big guy with skill.

The Flames have been fun to watch so far ths season. They will have their troubles, but they have been turned around and are headed in the right direction.

I really wish my Rangers looked like they had some rookies who actually just appeared and did well, rather than all the analysis of why that is not happening. Rangers are not much fun to watch, that much is certain at his point in time.
 
Forget Seth Jones, Mike Smith scored with 0.1 left against Detroit. My favorite play in hockey, when the goalie scores. He got the shot off quick, it was perfect. Wow.

He gloved it and launched a laser. Good for him.
 
What an unbelieveable thrill to see Smith score last night. I was at the game and knowing the Coyotes were up by two, we were looking for a snipe. He hit the center of the net.

I prodiuced a TV commercial with Mike a few weeks ago and he is a great guy. After we were finished, he hung around and had a beer with the crew. Never seen a pro athlete do that before.

Don't forget the amazing hockey sense and great work ethic.

Kid was amazing for the 67s for a few years. It's tough letting him go to the pros so early, but it's great seeing him do so well so early.
 
Seth Jones is going to make 3 teams look very stupid. MacKinnon is fantastic, Barkov no slouch and Drouin will be electric, but all 3 of those teams desperately needed what Jones brings, and he's the player they'll be whining about not having once they are ready to do some damage. Gotta love this kid.
