I'll be honest. I've never been a fan of paying goalies a lot money for a long time. The position is so volatile that you never know what you'll get any given season.

You look at the top scorers and, by and large, you know what you'll get over an 8 year term. Barring injury/extreme drop off, if you sign a 80 point guy in his prime you're likely getting 70-80 points every year of that term. But with goalies, even the best over an 8 year stretch will look like a Vezina candidate one year and then follow it up with a year that you wonder what the buyout cost will be.

Talk about paying for potential. Maybe he's a great starting goalie, maybe he's just a 40-50 GP guy.
