It’s not a terrible strategy.

1. Sign a tradable contract with a team you think is definitely going to miss the playoffs (a team that will eat a good portion of the cap hit).
2. Keep control of your tradability.
3. Get traded to one of the top teams at the deadline.
4. Win Stanley Cup.

It’s been reported now that Hall has a full NMC, so even if they’re out of it he won’t be traded at the deadline unless he waives...so weird.

Not really the strategy of star player though. Quite embarrassing actually for a former MVP if I am honest.

Super low standards.

I don’t think it’s crazy by Hall. Should easily be a PPG player with Eichel. Time for the league finances to recover and go for the big career contract next season.

I think some people were overthinking the idea Hall would take a 1 year deal as him hunting for a cup, rather then setting himself up for what should be solid stats for a huge contract starting in 2021.

What do you mean by that?

It is the first time in his NHL career that he has control of his destiny. If he has made that decision with the thought of possibly being traded at the deadline as suggested by Murf (nothing against you Murf btw), I feel this is super low.

A star player, in my mind at least, should be coming with the attitude of "I AM GOING TO MAKE YOU WIN" behaviour, not with the sneaky "of well, if things go wrong guess what, I can still end up with a contender at the deadline".

That's what I meant.

I kinda look at the whole situation as Hall delaying his decision for a season.

I understand this motive if you are a Tyson Barrie, I am not so sure if you are one Taylor Hall.

Choosing business before glory when you have Hall's status (and wallet).... I have my doubts.

He will prove me wrong, and gets me straight hopefully.

Too bad Buffalo is on everybody's no trade list, or we could move some other veterans. Particularly Goose. Maybe Stepan if they want to let Cozens stew for awhile.

It’s almost always business. Even when Hossa took a one year deal to chase a cup with Detroit he still got paid the exact same as the best player on the team—Lidstrom. Reportedly Hossa asked for more then that at first and Holland said “let me check if Lidstrom is okay with that, and Hossa then repled I’ll just take the same as Lidstrom” (heavy paraphrasing on my part)

And even if you go chase a cup for a year with the clear and away best team like Hossa did in Detroit, it doesn’t always work out. I don’t think there’s any team in the league right now that’s better then 25% to win the next cup. The prohibitive favorites Tampa can’t fit Hall anyway.

Absolutely get that rational, however how disappointing this might sound for any romantic hockey fan.

Wondering what the Sabres's chance of a Stanley cup is right now: 3%? Less?

No surprise we sucked against the Avs with outcast captain OEL and MVP Hall looking for any Mickey Mouse deal.

[alright! ok! peace! it is Sunday night, I am just bringing some salt and very bitter lime in that thread.... I confess. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!]

Looking at Buffalo's roster, I dont see why they're any less positioned for "glory" than 75% of the teams in the league? Assuming they figure out how to get their key RFAs signed, their top 6 makes ours looks legitimately AHL calibre. I'd legitimately salivate over the prospect of having Eichel/Staal as 1/2C. It's shocking how many people here are handwaving them off with LOLZ...

They need a goalie.

I'm 95% sure Thompson was signed to that deal as AZ trade bait. Cost certainty. He's spending the offseason here in AZ, or at least part of it according to Buffalo fans.

Most of their expensive players are trending downhill (Okposo, Skinner, Risto...). It is no secret that Eichel has been thinking about leaving the ship (Bob Mackenzie).

Staal is undoubtedly a good signing, but he is not getting any younger.

This might be the swan song of the Eichel' Sabres; a one off, one season shot.

Without a top notch goalie at this stage though.

I rather put the cash under my mattress than in that bank if you ask me.

Hall- Eichel-Skinner
Olofsson- Staal- Schmaltz
Eakins -Cozens- Reinhart (easy minutes down the lineup)
Girgensson/Rieder-Lazar- Okposso

Dahlin-Miller
McCabe-Montour
Oesterle-Joker

Keumper-Ulmark

For the cost of Risto, Tage, and a first? That's not terrible. Lot of ways to play with that lineup for the coaching staff.

Really hope they can move Raanta and Schmaltz instead of Kuemper. Get something decent for those two and maybe one of the younger RFAs that weren't qualified and this team might be easy enough on the eyes to pay attention to. With Kuemper pitching shutouts anyway. I just don't want to see them completely tank with no 1st round pick. We've been beaten up enough the last decade plus and certainly don't deserve to sit through a season like that with no chance for a high pick.

Raanta (50%) and Fischer for Thompson?

EDIT: maybe add Schmaltz and Ristolainen (or does Hall take them out of this?)

Are Cozens and Mittlestadt both projected to be C’s long term? Would be nice to be able to maybe pry one of those guys away.
