According to the article, which you could have Googled, there is widespread racism in police departments across the country.

Please parse my words more accurately. “Widespread” is not equivalent to “All”. As you say, words have meaning.

Update your priors- “priors” are your prior knowledge and beliefs, before seeing evidence. This is taken from a NYT article titled “How to think like an Epidemiologist “ which you can Google.
Consider the term “Update your priors” to mean “avoid confirmation bias” for the purposes of our discussion.

It's behind a paywall. What is the proof they cite?

“A study of nearly 100 million traffic stops by police departments nationwide found that black drivers were far more likely to be pulled over than white drivers. But, interestingly the difference becomes smaller at night, when it’s harder for police to see the race of the driver. “

“A study of police shooting databases published by the National Academy of Sciences showed that African American men were about 2 1/2 times than White men to be killed by police”

and the article goes on.

The first point I think is legitimate, the second one not so much because you have to weigh it against the frequency with which police interact with a race. The frequency is not proportional to the demographics because the crime level is also not proportional. There is a well cited study on this topic that the authors retracted. They retracted it not because it was wrong, but because they didn't like how it was being used. The conclusions were:

1) As the proportion of Black or Hispanic officers in a FOIS [fatal officer-involved shooting] increases, a person shot is more likely to be Black or Hispanic than White, a disparity explained by county demographics;
2) race-specific county-level violent crime strongly predicts the race of the civilian shot; and
3) although we find no overall evidence of anti-Black or anti-Hispanic disparities in fatal shootings, when focusing on different subtypes of shootings (e.g., unarmed shootings or “suicide by cop”), data are too uncertain to draw firm conclusions.

A study finding no evidence of racial bias in police shootings earns a correction that critics call an “opaque half measure”

Are you guys attempting to morph this thread form NHL teams (not ours) into team Black vs. team White?
How about y'all take this shit to another thread, or start anew?

Yes... that's why we have a Lounge Thread. I'm guilty of it too.

If the NHL can make the game political, then so can we. :D

Only as long as you stay within Rule #4. ;)

Dallas defended an empty net against Colorado for five minutes. Really puts those 7-1 blowouts in context.

Montreal has to be flipping Allen right? Otherwise they have like 15 mil locked up in goaltending.

Something like Allen for Rittich and a 2nd could be interesting. The math is they add about a million in cap (Lindgren to Rittich) to jump a draft round (third to second) and get about the same level of backup goaltending.

I thought they paid a lot for him. I mean, he may have had a better season, but he was overpaid. And if you pay for someone overpaid, you overpay.

Makes no sense to me to pick up Allen's contract at all, unless you're a believer. Surprised he got a third.
