Around the NHL 2025 playoff edition

Caps already down 1 game and can't seem to keep up with the Canes at all.

If the second game starts with the same pace like the first, this will be a sweep.

Though the Sox names are weird.

A player is a Yankee. Or a Red. Or a Cardinal.
But, you don't call a Boston player a "Red Sock". or a Chicago player a "White Sock".

Which is to say, weird team names have existed for quite a while.

You could if the other sock was lost in the washing machine or dryer

No idea why they didn't add an S at the end. Only thing I can think of is they save a bunch of money on promo stuff because its one less letter. Every team gets a shortened form when fans talk about them so I'll be calling them the Mammas

Disappointing but I'm not as disappointed as I was when I heard Las Vegas didn't go with the Dessert Night name.

Vegas was always going to be named for Bill Foley's West Point hard-on. It's why I never liked them.

This feels like a post-draft lottery theory made to fit what happened.

It’s not hard to make up a flimsy theory with zero proof other than the win itself.
i always thought it was stupid the nhl did the lotto before hand and behind closed doors. glad this year it was finally done in the open live and they should just have it pick the entire order not just the top 3 spots.

another question

if they didn't have the stupid rule when the devils "won" it but could only move up 4 spots do you think they would've drafted larson still or went with hopkins?

Larsson's stock was slightly down going into the draft and Nugent-Hopkins was a bit of tepid consensus #1. Our centers at the time were Zajac (26), Elias (34), Josefson (19), and Henrique (20). Obviously they were still optimistic about Josefson at that point but I don't think they expected him or Rico to be a #1 center like was expected from RNH. Jon Merrill was looking very good after that 2010-11 season before he'd get suspended in Fall 2011.

And just for the excuse to talk about the "stupid rule".......from 1995-2012 the lottery only drew one winner and that team could only move up four spots. We can blame Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway for that.

The league wanted a draft lottery for the 1995 CBA after Ottawa's owner accidentally bragged about tanking to get Alexandre Daigle in 1993. But the league managed not to iron out the lottery procedure until May 1995.

Simultaneously the Orlando Magic were the #1 seed in the East en route to the NBA Finals. They had been a long shot winner of the 1993 lottery and it seemed like they had been handed the next dynasty. NHL teams were fearful of an "Orlando situation" happening so the eventual compromise was limiting how far a team could move up.

LA won the first lottery in 1995 and moved up from #7 to #3. Apparently they had Aki Berg ranked #1 on their board. So in a parallel world where the limit didn't exist, we might be talking about Aki Berg like Patrik Stefan.

Is this whole "suggest" thing the defense is doing something unique to the Canadian court system? I've never seen that in the US. Or at least worded that way.

Couple more goalie spots cemented with Andersen and Johansson extending. I wouldn't be opposed to bringing Jake Allen back but we'll see if the feeling is mutual. San Jose probably has a 1A spot open but that probably wouldn't be the most attractive spot unless somebody wanted the paycheck. Vegas/Florida will likely have attractive backup spots.

The NBA/MLB also use the 14 ball method for their lotteries. The main reason it was done behind closed doors (with team witnesses) is that it's not a really exciting process. And then there's the possibility of the anticlimactic redraw. If I recall correctly, San Jose won the first three drawings in 2024 before Chicago finally won the second pick.

ESPN tried its best to explain the 14 ball method live. After the third ball, they needed to keep part of the screen dedicated to which team needed which ball(s). They showed that screen then cut away for 30 seconds and drew "13" and I had no idea which team that correlated to.

Not surprising. A guy like Verbeek was always gonna be the one to do it.

Terrible message, but this league is always last to get it.
Absolutely, Verbeek seems to be a dick that doesn't care what everyone else thinks. He didn't get the nickname "Little Ball of Hate" as a player for nothing.

I expect Carter Hart's return to the NHL by the end of next season. God, I hate that I typed that....

I hope the bands that are associated with them (Offspring, Pennywise) stop being affiliated with them after this.

I’m not sure if Pennywise has any affiliation with them other than goal song, but I saw they did “Offspring night” a couple of years ago. If the band members actually show up and do business with them anymore then they’re shit heads too.

The Ducks have always been a joke, little brother franchise to me. Always second to the Kings.

I know you can say we’ve been that to the Rangers, but I don’t care.

Those guys are a little different in they actually did heinous **** themselves according to the evidence already out there in the public domain, Quenneville and Bowman were one step away from that in enabling/looking the other way with heinous ****

Voynov hasn’t been allowed back in the league after what he did either.

like Sonny once said nobody cares. you have players out there still playing will go to the HOF numbers retired maybe one day. that didn't step up and defend or protect a union brother instead openly mocked and joked about it. why should it be any different. its the same thing with the hockey canada you have players that knew what went on and no one said or did anything about it until the story broke and still are claiming the i didn't know defense.

I dont want to make a dive into it but what Q`n`B is absolutely as awful at least. I would prefer to not see any of those people on the ice or near the ice on any league.

But everybody are making business.

Oh I guess some moral standarts are important part but business is more important. It would be interesting to see will Mcleod and co be able to play after what they did in ~their country and how many years it will take if they find an agreement in the court.
I think that’s much less likely especially for McLeod, Foote, Formenton, and Dube.

Anaheim is doing this and accepting the heat because they think Quenneville could be a game changer and difference maker for their organization. Someone who can make them a significantly better team and win them a cup. Doubt any team would feel close to as strongly about any of those 4 guys.

Quenneville betrayed his professional resposibility as a coach. He shouldn't be back in the league again. He's a horrible role model for other hockey coaches at all levels.
Players don't really have a responsibility built into their job, its a bit different. Thats why you see players sticking around among the leagues with legal probems.

I'm not surprised he's back. Sports team owners are usually of low moral and ethical standards and what Quenneville did is normal every day business in their mind. All it takes is 1 guy out of 30 to think that way and bring him in.
