The Wasatch Mountain Range got its name from the Paiute Indians, which lived near the mountains long before Mormon settlers arrived in the 19th Century. The Mormon pioneers adopted the Paiute word "Wasatch" as the name for the mountains. But what does Wasatch really mean? According to Utah Native-American expert LaVan Martineau, the word "Wasatch" means frozen penis!

On page 186 of Martineau's well-researched book on Utah Indian legends, lore and language he records:

"Wasatch -- the name comes from the Paiute and Ute Indian phrase pronounced Wuhu'Seai, meaning Frozen Penis. Archie Rogers of [the Shivwit Indian Band] tells the following story about the origin of this name: "The Utes told me what the word 'Wasatch' means. They said that one time many Indians lived there between Heber and Provo. One day the men were out hunting when a big blizzard came up and they lost one of the hunters. When they found him he was dead and his penis was frozen stiff. they therefore called the place Wuhu' Seai Frozen Penis.

Now you know.

It's a little too AHL/IHL for my liking.

Also, I'm not sure naming a team after an extinct, hairy elephant is really the way to go here.

Well the alternatives were The Frozen Penis or just give up and not have a name, just a phone book description.

“Yeah, we won’t pick Utah Raptors because it is so similar to Toronto. We’ll instead nominate three names wherein the two actual names are those of professional lacrosse teams in Colorado…”

Honestly, does Big Paleontology have a say in this?

That frosty trade is interesting.
Feels like the Flames won that trade. Unloading an underachieving pending UFA, a young player who is holding on to an NHL career, and a 2nd rd pick for 2 potential top 6 players with term in return. Holding on to both 1st round picks they own (Jersey and Florida's) maintains the assets needed to improve on defense next.

Flames making a run to keep up with Avs and Canucks in the WC.

Is Briere trying to be a worse GM than Ron Hextall? 4 RH shot wingers in the top 6, 2 170 lb wingers for the 3rd line. Noah Cates as #1 C. Not sure the play there.

Hope they stay just good enough to keep that 8th seed. Think I’d love to play them or Vancouver in the first round compared to the other options.
