Reaves gets 5 games and Scheifele gets 4 playoff games and was a first offense, seems totally fair.

Appearances.

A hit like that one should get the max, even for a 1st offense. OK, max -1 for a 1st offender.

If the NHL/NHLPA want to get serious about player safety they need to bring in a lifetime suspension - and use it. Repeat offender status would not reset after some short time without an offence. I forget the time on that but it is way too short.

You want someone to go to the Leafs dressing room to fight Reaves?

Or just any random Oiler fight any random Leaf? To what end?
or you know I don't want every clean hit to end in a fight and I find it funny that the one time there was a dirty hit it led to nothing...

4 playoff games was too much though, if that's regular season fine but 4 playoff games is huge.

I got that. I just don't quite get what you expected when the guy who needs to have his helmet punched is gone for the night.

Clean hits shouldn't need to lead to fights. There are some that are just barely legal that still aren't quite what I would call 'clean' that maybe should lead to fights. Especially those that seem to target smaller players or more skilled players.

I really hate seeing hits like that Reaves on Nurse one. Huge strong man at very high speed hitting someone like that. Players keep getting bigger and faster. Some day someone is going to get killed. As it is a lot of former players seem to die 20 years early with CTE symptoms.

I expected nothing, just found it funny that clean hits = fight and an actual dirty hit got nothing, I think you are reading way to much into the comment...

Agree. That's why I said appearances. I thought the rule of thumb was 1 PO game = 2 regular season games. So it was = 8 games.

But there are 2 distinct interpretations of that Scheifele hit. It all depends on which one you choose to believe. Both have arguments in their favour.

Given Scheifele's otherwise clean record and his genuine reaction to the call I lean toward his side of the debate. But I can certainly see the other side. That said, the simple ambiguity of the play should have lead to a lighter penalty.

Need suspensions to be some ratio of time lost to injury. 2x length of injury or some.

Do you really want to watch a game where the go-to option to defend is to flip the puck out of play?

Not only would it make a power play worthless but the rest of the game would be too boring to watch.
Was it ever really that big a problem that they had to turn it into a penalty? Sure, the odd intentional flip out happened. But when you're in the typical underlying situation of being under heavy pressure in your own zone, flipping the puck over the glass isn't a gimme. You run the risk of an unknown bounce off the glass that could be to your detriment instead of looking for safer clearing attempts.

No, it does not deserve a penalty. Treat it like icing so the defending team can't make a change. That's sufficient.

It was only 3 playoff games. His teammates saw to that by getting swept by the Mighty Habs during the Asterisk Season.

I'm sorry...his genuine reaction? You mean the look of slack jawed incredulity followed by the bitching and moaning that follows every penalty called on him? Sorry, that dog don't hunt for me. I suppose I should recuse myself from any discussions of 55 since I freely admit that he is my most loathed player on the team. But where would be the fun in that.

Well they get your attention and capture your imagination. Some advanced stats are just veiled opinions, can be ignored. Fit into the AI discussion too...

I don't buy this you have to have a face puncher in the lineup, you need team toughness something the Jets lack. As for Reaves he is on the ice to hurt players and that's what he does and the league condones it.
In the brief moment that a player has the opportunity to make a dirty play, do you honestly think that the idea of grappling with Ryan Reaves for a few seconds before falling to the ice is scary enough to stop them from making that play?
