Around the NHL: 2024-25 Season, Are You Not Entertained?

Monday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens was another example of the ordeal the Canucks have made out of trying to win.

They had a dominant, physical four-point game from J.T. Miller, whose two goals were the beleaguered centre’s first since his 10-game leave of absence ended four weeks ago, and his first against a goaltender since Oct. 26.

With 2+2, Miller was in on all 4 Canucks goals. It seems like he might have gotten the message and he wants to stay in Vancouver.

:dunno:

Well, sounds like Skinner is wearing out his welcome in EDM. Who could've seen that coming? I was dumbfounded posters wanted to keep a leader of this team who is the epitome of everything wrong with this squad.
I was one of them. It's because I knew/know this roster isn't going anywhere soon, and I'd rather ditch his cap hit in it's entirety after three seasons, instead of it festering around and taking cap dollars away for six farking years.

But who are we kidding? It just doesn't matter what the team does because they will find a way to do it wrong and suck.

Haha, you may be right in that regard, unfortunately.

My favorite day of this offseason was people fretting about Skinner scoring 40 playing wing on the top line. I said immediately that was absurd. We didn’t want him on our top line anymore and Edmonton was actually trying to win. Also, he’s a slow skater who doesn’t even attempt defense. They were NEVER going to let him be that with McDavid or Draisaitl for long. Never seemed like a fit.

Of course…if we weren’t going to utilize the cap savings and suck anyway…I’d rather he have just sat in the pressbox all year.

5. Agents always attend the world juniors, so the end of Ottawa’s event allowed Brian Bartlett (J.T. Miller) and Pat Brisson (Elias Pettersson) to see their clients face-to-face and chat with the Canucks in Montreal. As Quinn Hughes has said, if the team was playing better, there would be less noise. And, as Pettersson told Iain MacIntyre, “I know I can do better… I know what I can do, and that's what I'm focussing on doing.” That’s the right attitude because you can always re-write the narrative.

But I stick to what I’ve said the past few days: the Canucks are investigating the market for both players and, as I write this, there’s no certain outcome. There are definitely a lot of teams trying to figure out why it's at this point, and how that affects their pursuit of either player. Some relationships are difficult to repair.

6. The Athletic’s Josh Yohe reported Vancouver turned down a Miller for Mika Zibanejad deal, and I believe he’s correct — with some semantics. (A few weeks ago, New York denied it, but all it takes is for someone like Yohe to shake it out, and information follows.)

You’ll remember that when Miller took his mental health break, the Rangers, who covet the player, were in Vancouver. From what I understand, they approached the Canucks to discuss what something could look like, and Zibanejad was included in the conversation. I don’t know that Zibanejad, who has a no-move clause, was ever approached. I asked at the time and did not receive a clear answer. I also think it was actually a bigger deal, and one of the issues is that Vancouver adores Braden Schneider, who the Rangers do not want to trade. This would be the second time New York has rejected a Vancouver attempt for him.

7. The Rangers gave Zac Jones permission to talk to other teams. There’s interest, and he’s good enough to take advantage of a new opportunity. One caveat: since he’s not a big guy, teams with a smallish blue line are an unlikelier destination.

8. The most coveted Ranger is undoubtedly Vincent Trocheck. But they aren’t interested in doing that, and, listening to his comments lately, you could see them making him captain.

I don’t know much about the specifics of the Miller-Pettersson relationship (my Twitter thread), but the rumours got me thinking about the intractable conflict between the Millers and Petterssons of this world. Both can be prolific scorers, but they go about their business in different ways.

J.T. Miller thrives on confrontation on and off the ice. VAN9 will outwork you low in the defensive zone or in the OZ corner and jump by you for a scoring chance. He’ll crosscheck you just hard enough for you to retaliate and land in the penalty box.

Elias Pettersson, meanwhile, feels most at ease in non-confrontation. As one of the frailest players in the NHL (6’2” but just 185lb), VAN40 struggles to win body contacts. Therefore he plays a type of game that minimizes physical duels and maximizes his odds of landing in space, between defenders, where he can catch-and-shoot before you get within shouting distance.

However reality is seldom black and white.

This is an interesting look from the outside.

As a Vancouver fan said, Miller is a real hypocrite. He yells at his teammates demanding effort, but often plays lazy defense himself, sometimes showing terrible body language and effort. And this is just one example, but it seems Pettersson definitely doesn't like it.
