Well they kind of are when they need someone to take their cap headaches or someone forces their way to the bright lights (a la Fox) but Drury has made some clunker deals too

Yeah but I meant it more so in terms of adding guys. Fox shouldn't count because Stevie Wonder could've made that move, it wasn't hard in the slightest. But if you think about their past decade, who have they added and they gotten better in NY? The only 2 trades that come to mind are ironically Zibanejad for Brassard and when they moved up for Miller with our pick from the Grabner trade. They don't trade for guys in shitty spots and give them more ice time + chances. Until they fix that as an organization, it'll be great years of being close, possibly winning a Cup and then when shit hits the fan, it ends up leading to this

NY side of the Hudson River
Kakko would be the perfect bottom six piece, but I don't think there's any appetite on either side of the Hudson to ship him here.
NYR is also not a very savvy trading team when you think about it. The Devils got Siegs/Kovy for mid round picks and they're both playing like top 2/top 4 dmen for us. NYR is too reliant on their drafting/UFA route. You need to make some under the radar trades to consistently be good.
They're also bad at development (particularly at forward) and have been for a while. Shayna Goldman said as much on Marek yesterday- they didn't build around the forward youth core of Kakko, Laffy, Chytil, and others. Just stuck em on the bottom six while the vets had the run of it.

While I don't think it will end up being a bad contract over time, the 8 year extension for Lafreniere so far looks like Kotkaniemi 2.0.

The fan fic of Kakko coming here is too good! Him succeeding here and becoming a fan favorite with Jack and Bratt, after forcing his way out of NY, and after all the mudflinging between both teams on Jack vs Kappo since the 2019 draft lotto, is PEAK comedy.

He was playing really well before he signed. Then he immediately stopped trying after signing lol
eh, over his head probably, at least based on what he was last season. Contract was always built around projection around improvements (and his playoffs), and locking him down before the rising cap. I don't think he was quite as good as the 28 goals he scored last year looked.

He's real f***ing dogwater right now, though. Like, not stagnation but real regression. Hard to tell if it's real or just the listlessness of the Rangers.

Pierre LeBrun noted that Ivan Provorov's younger brother (16 years old) just committed to Ohio State. So the thought now is that Provorov isn't against signing an extension in Columbus so he could be around for his brother.

Would be interesting if Columbus still opted to trade him and then tried to sign him in offseason. CBJ GM Don Waddell was on the other end of that equation when he got Keith Tkachuk as a rental in 2007 from St. Louis. Tkachuk signed back with the Blues after the season.
