It's for the best. Last thing NJ needs is another anchor contract.
For sure. That would be two Palat's, both pretty much the same age. With the most recent Palat being signed even longer, even if we got a good season out of that one.

And that's without the current pandemonium surrounding Dougie and his future from a lot of people here lol.

I always enjoy the story of how Detroit scout Hakan Andersson accidentally found Datsyuk. He was out scouting for 1998 prospect Dmitri Kalinin and noticed Datsyuk on the other team. Andersson made a mental note to try to catch Datsyuk again later that season. But Datsyuk's team played in the middle of nowhere (and had been relegated from the top league) so it was a logistical nightmare to see him play a home game.

It wasn't the best use of time to spend 2-3 days traveling to see a second division game, so Datsyuk remained an unknown. Depending if he had submitted paperwork, this would have been Datsyuk's third draft year too.

Andersson tried to see Datsyuk a third time and he noticed a Calgary scout on the same flight. The plane had mechanical issues and never took off, so they never made it to their intended destination.

Kinda crazy to think they drafted Datsyuk off just a couple viewings and then he turns into a HOFer.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

On the bright side (I am sad) I'd say that sets the ceiling on an Evans or Sturm trade

I’d like Evans.

Would've been all over that for Eller, I assume they wait closer to the deadline for a 4C upgrade. Jake Evans in MTL would be my next target.

Yeah, I think we need to accumulate more cap. Not sure we could have afforded Eller on the cap right now.

I've mentioned it before, but the guy I'd be looking at it Michael Mccarron. Good faceoff guy, only 900K, under contract this year and next which I'm sure appeals to Fitzy given his well known distaste for rentals.

does anyone have a weird devils memory you aren’t even sure is real?

because here’s mine. in my head, halfway through the first round of the playoffs in 2012, the devils switched from their classic (cup era) goal horn to the one we currently have and i have no clue why.

Pretty clear that Tatar should be the 13th or 14th forward on this team. Would like to see us add a top 6 winger to play in the top 6 to replace Palat and drop in to the 4th line in an ideal world later in the year.

James Mirtle of The Athletic just did a pet peeve of mine. He wrote a "Who is an offer sheet target this offseason" article but included a few 10.2(c) RFAs (notably Luke) who aren't eligible to sign an offer sheet.

That caused me to have flashbacks to summer 2019 when my coworker was adamant that Nikita Gusev was offer sheet eligible because some random Penguins blog said so. Or my other buddy going on a long text rant about nobody offer sheeting Torey Krug in 2014 when he didn't understand that Krug couldn't sign one.

If Dubas were 56 (or probably even 46) and not 36 or whatever he is, this would be his last GM job and nobody would give a f*** about him. The fact that he came from Toronto and not Arizona also gives him points.

Chayka was jocked because of how young he was, and he was 10 years younger or maybe even more when he became the Arizona GM than Dubas is right now.

But he was the GM of Arizona and not Toronto, and now most people don't even remember at all who he is, and the people that do remember him it's for the wrong reasons.

Now he's probably just remembered as the young guy that had something to do with Wendy's (I don't even remember what he had to do with Wendy's) and cost Arizona in the end. Devils fans probably remember him because he was apparently talking to HBSE about a job for them, but not specifically with the Devils. He's somewhat disgraced now, whereas Dubas really isn't.

Anyway, enough about Chayka, Dubas is worthless. He'll get another GM job after this, not many guys do get a third shot. But this job looks like it's gonna be over before he's 40. So that's two big market GM jobs under his belt before 40.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers are looking to hire him at some point. If not them then some other Canadian team.
