Just taking a quick peek at next summer's UFA goalie market and it is kinda ugly, so it made sense for Ottawa to extend Ullmark although knee jerk thought is that 8.25 mil is a bit stiff.

For Ullmark, there probably weren't many plausible landing spots. Colorado/Vegas will be hunting for a new starter potentially, but both probably won't have the cap space for an expensive goalie.

Sens had to get a deal done with Ullmark. There's no way they were going to allow him being unsigned hang over their heads all season or risk seeing him walk for nothing next offseason and having to start the goalie search up all over again. Ullmark's camp probably did well by waiting until after the Swayman situation played out (not to mention Shesterkin's situation).

Keeping the term down was probably more important to Ottawa than the AAV. They did well limiting it to 4 seasons up until Ullmark is 35. I think Ullmark would've had more than enough suitors next offseason if he went UFA, but struggling with the move to Ottawa and their system and/or a higher workload is also a risk.

Markstrom always made more sense for us (especially retained) to not only keep the cap hit down (Ullmark was always gonna get $7M+), but also leave an opening for one of our many young goalie prospects to (hopefully) eventually take over. Not sure how the goalie prospects look in Ottawa's system, but it has to be a relief for them to have the starting position addressed for he foreseeable future.

The Daccord contract is for FIVE years? That means it don't end for SIX more years?

WUT!?

I saw the $5 million, but thought it was gonna be for 3 years, not 5 lol.

Adin Hill didn't even get this much in term, nor dollars after winning the cup lol.

You'd have to think Grubauer is already an expected buyout for next offseason. Grubauer is pretty much exactly what Cory Schneider was by 19-20. Even right down to the same age! Well, he's actually roughly 8 months younger than Schneider was heading into the 19-20 season. But that was year 4 of Cory's decline, this is likely to be year 4 of Grubauer's decline. The only difference is that Cory was spending more time on IR by that point (Grubauer spent enough time on it last year) and Cory was also better before his decline than Grubauer ever was.

Yeah if the Sens burned ANOTHER 1st on a 1 year rental while missing the playoffs that would be brutal. Even if he isn't worth the contract, it doesn't look as bad as the debrincat and chychrun debacles

Pretty happy with our goalie situation right now.

Fitz gonna keep drafting two goalies a year with these prices lol
Our goalie situation is great. Two legit veterans that can handle the workload and nice cap hits and flexibility to walk away in two years. Now if they end up being good ? Only time will tell

Looks like Devils legend Eric Comrie beat out Devils legend Kaapo Kahkonen for Winnipeg's backup spot.
Comrie AND Brossoit both seem to be in a regurgitating love triangle with Winnipeg.

This has gotta be like Comrie's 3rd or 4th tenure in Winnipeg. Didn't he get claimed by Detroit once? Then ended up back in Winnipeg. Then he was claimed by us the one year, then ended up being reclaimed by them.

Then he signed in Buffalo, now he's back again after 2 years.

Kahkonen played reasonably well last season for NJ. It's not great if he couldn't beat out Comrie.
He'd be a good third string option for us so we don't have to use Daws at all (hopefully) this year, but then we run out of space for Poulter to play in the AHL.

Nobody told me there'd be days like these...

I think the team probably wants to use Daws for a bit this season since Allen is up at the end of the year and they probably expect Daws to handle the backup role next year. If they give Daws the odd spot start for maybe 5-7 games it's probably ok.

Lavoie on waivers again!

How long can this continue?

San Jose, Chicago or Columbus should stop this madness and claim this guy for their NHL roster.

Would be amusing to know if Lavoie has been jumping on flights or has been home with a suitcase packed waiting for the dust to settle. He is on a two way contract, so hopefully this ordeal means he's getting at least a few days of big league pay.

Apparently somebody lower in priority than Edmonton put in a claim for Lavoie, so we'll see if one of those clubs grabs him or if they were just being a nuisance a couple days ago.

It was only five games though, people were jumping the shark demanding we keep him over Allen, and I’m not a huge Allen fan either.

Kahkonen sucks. Probably in the very tail end of the top 64 nhl goalies, though. There's a LOT of dudes who suck.
He was a bit inflated by Minnesota when he played there. His underlyings weren't that good in Minnesota, despite his raw numbers being solid over there.

His first year in San Jose was MISERABLE. And that was behind a team that wasn't even as bad as the team they iced the next season. He was very solid the next season. Actually, last year may have been his best year in the league, considering Minnesota was propping him up, just like they propped up Dubnyk for years, the resurrected 30-something year old Alex Stalock who had washed out of the league years before, Talbot, etc.

So yeah, last year was probably his best year, but his 22-23 was so bad, no matter how horrible that team in San Jose was. I can't help but think that hurt his stock a little bit.

Agree - I’m hoping this gets him a few more $$. Part of me thought it would be funny just to have him in waiver limbo for the year and somehow manage a full NHL paycheck.

But then I thought that would be cruel. Better if he could actually get an NHL shot somewhere.
