We'll see if it gets to that point, but Howard/Tampa sounds similar to when like Rutger McGroarty soured on Winnipeg who seemed to want not to burn that ELC year immediately. McGroarty announced he'd be going back to Michigan for his junior year, but Winnipeg accepted that he wasn't going to sign and they traded him to Pittsburgh. McGroarty signed shortly thereafter.

Little bit of a game of chicken, Howard ideally wouldn't want to go the August 15th route since they would delay his next contract by a year.

In the old timey Rangers’ defense (barf) Original Six Red Wings owner/Robber Baron James Norris threw enough money around to gain a controlling interest in the Rangers and Blackhawks. He was also the Bruin’s creditor.

Norris famously turned the other American teams into Detroit’s farm clubs, particularly the Blackhawks. Chicago had an infamous run as NHL’s worst team for over a decade while under Norris families’ control (1944-66):

Sounded like some stubborness like with Brian Burke and Mike Cammalleri in 2014. The offers weren't great and Burke decided he'd rather have nothing instead of a mid-round pick for some reason. Canucks GM Patrick Allvin seemed to make similar comments about teams not offering much for Boeser. Although a month ago I think Vancouver had a more plausible shot at the playoffs before St. Louis' winning streak.

Thats interesting, I actually had no idea. I thought Don La Greca (shoutout) was the PBP guy for the Rangers radio

I still frequent AM/FM radio but mostly for the sports talk shows like on ESPN NY

I know that the Rangers are going to get players regardless of the drama coming out of MSG solely because existing in one arbitrary geographic area in North America will get them some big names. But it'll be funny if a big free agent specifically avoided going there or if a prominent trade target put them on his NTC/NMC.

A post that I'll always remember from lurking the Rangers forum was a regular saying that Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt are players that Devils fans can hang their hats on for 15 years, and they haven't had a guy like that since Rod Gilbert. Whatever issues they have seems to be very deep-rooted.

As a draft geek, I do enjoy the process in how the Sharks got Couture. Former GM Doug Wilson was a former (OHL) Ottawa 67 and still seemingly plugged in with the team. It used to be a decent bet that San Jose would draft at least one Ottawa guy every year.

At the 2007 trade deadline, San Jose agreed to trade Evgeni Nabokov to LA for Rob Blake, only for Blake to invoke his NMC. Blake had just signed back with LA and didn't feel like moving again. Kinda funny knowing that'd he sign with San Jose ~15 months later. Nabokov would end up taking the starting goalie gig back from Vesa Toskala in those playoffs.

At the draft, San Jose had a deal in place to send Toskala and Mark Bell to Toronto for a package centered around pick #13. Logan Couture was playing for Ottawa and apparently word got out among the team that Florida (picking #10) was planning on taking him.

Meanwhile St. Louis was picking #9 and were trying to move up for Jakub Voracek. They'd offer #9 and #24 to Edmonton for #6 but were rebuffed (there was a perceived tier drop after 6/7). After being turned down, St. Louis' next target was Lars Eller and they figured they could trade down and still get him. San Jose traded up from #13 to #9 to snipe Couture from Florida. The Panthers would end up with Keaton Ellerby instead.

Decent fun to wonder what the butterfly effect might have been. Would LA's path have been different with Nabokov (ie, they're not bad enough to get Doughty in 2008)?
