Around the NHL 2024-25 regular season Part II

The Hockey Guy on the YouTube speculating if both Miller and Pettersson get dealt, and so does Boeser, maybe Hughes would ask to get out as well. Of course he postulates Quinn might view the Devils as a destination of interest.

Not saying “OMG this is gonna happen” but just for fun: What’s the package that gets Quinn (two years remaining)

Mercer?

Or would we say just wait the two years and don’t give up assets assuming he signs with us?

I saw the video. Can't believe RutherFOOL said all that in the media. I guess he got tired of not hearing himself talk after he said he's gonna shut up and let Alvin do the talking a couple years ago.

And then I think it was even posted in this thread that Rick Dhaliwal said he hears from people that Quinn won't re-sign there.

I posted that. And if it's true, can you blame him? Jim Benning might be the dumbest guy to be hired as GM of a team, but at least he never trashed people on his team, amplified it to the media, and let it drag out for months before a resolution. Rutherford has done this twice in Vancouver- once with Bruce Boudreau, and now this.

After Dillon is gone:

Q. Hughes - Kovacevic
L. Hughes - Pesce
Siegenthaler/Silayev - Nemec/Casey

Don't talk about my cap.

as long as everything is going good here then quinn is 100% going to be targeting us when he hits ufa so i would just sit tight and let him come here no need to give up the pieces to get him. devils have to be trending in the right direction though

Haven't seen the Blues this year. Given the Devils lack of forward depth, is Brandon Saad worth a look?

Admittedly, there would be some salary gymnastics (possibly releasing a veteran or two).

And who plays defense?

They have a similar version of Nemec in Tom Willander on the way. I'd imagine they'd want a LHD to replace Hughes in the unlikely world where they did trade him in the near future. And then it'd probably depend on what they get back for Pettersson and/or Miller. If they did that rumored Pettersson for Cozens/Byram/two XL pizzas trade, that could open up some other needs.

If it were me in Vancouver's shoes, I'd probably be more interested in Silayev than Nemec/Casey since I'd already have Hronek/Willander on the right side.

I'd probably pass on Saad at this point. He's under contract for next year so that would put another body in front of Gritsyuk, plus the cap hit.. Claiming him now would also eat into how much cap space we'd have going into the deadline and possibly limit our possibilities at adding a bottom six center.

Literally half of that D is defense-first.

its actually hilarious how when Luke is having a dominant stretch and looks like an (already) #1 DMan, that guy is nowhere to be found. Luke has a few rough games? "CAN HE PLAY DEFENSE?!?!?"

But the other half is horrific. We're seeing that this year with Dougie and Luke now. Don't see many top teams with two defensive liabilities on the back end.

copied from the GDT:

among 217 DMen who have played at least 250 minutes at 5 on 5, here are Luke's ranks:

CA/60- 21st.
GA/60- 19th.
xGA/60- 37th.
HDCA/60- 50th.

This notion of "Luke can't play defense!" that you continually push is tiring. Do better. Yes, he has struggled a bit lately, but the point remains.

Luke was one of the best overall defenseman in the league up until the recent skid.

THREE Hughes???? Hard pass.
Yea who needs a perennial Norris candidate on the back end.

Was listening to the 32 Thoughts podcast and Friedman wondered when the last time two contenders made a significant midseason trade. I immediately thought of the COL/NJD trade of Rolston for Lemieux+ in November 1999.

Interesting deal to look back on. From a Colorado perspective it seemed more straightforward as Lemieux was an impending UFA who they didn't have the budget to sign. Colorado would be sold in April 2000 to an owner with deep pockets.

Devils had an overflow of LW/C types and needed a natural RW to balance out the lineup plus Pepe's grit which was missing. Elias/Morrison held out to start the season but signed around Halloween. Scott Gomez had unexpectedly made the roster in their absence but had earned his roster spot after a big opening month. Of secondary concern was the 2000 Expansion Draft and Lou knew we couldn't protect everybody. Lemieux being an impending UFA freed up a protection spot for somebody else.

Obviously neither Rolston/Lemieux were as good as Rantanen and then neither guy would be involved in the 2001 SCF.
