I'd need to re-read the rules, but at quick glance looks like Holtz is just south of the GP threshold.

------------

Rantanen trade brought back some memories of Anaheim dealing Teemu Selanne for Jeff Friesen, Steve Shields, and a 2nd. The pick eventually netted Corey Perry.

Always enjoy when teams have to include some random prospect just as a placeholder so a team can retain. Ie, when we traded Cole Brady to retain on Chris Tanev last year.

They sold a year too late, but you know what they say:

Best time to have planted a tree is 20 years ago. Second best time is today.

I do not think that they sold a year too late. Holtz at the end of 2023 was a player who had gotten no significant time in the NHL and whose NHL results were atrocious. At least after 2023-24 a team could convince themselves that this was an effective soft-minute scorer who needed some work to get him to be something more.

yeah he should have been in the meier trade.

Saved probably Shakir and a 2nd

I can only imagine the Sharks were insistent on a D prospect given what they had in the pipeline at the time. Taking a quick look at TSN's 2023 ranking and it wasn't very strong on D in the 25-35 range where the Sharks would have a couple picks.

Corrente and several of his teammates were involved in a purported sexual assault, I think it was the year after he was drafted. But he also said publicly that role model was John Gotti. He might not have been the brightest guy.

He walked that back saying he didn't admire him but the story of coming from nothing and making a name for himself. I had no clue any of this was a thing until today either.
I have no idea how I never heard that about Corrente until now. Was this something that didn’t come out until years later? Because it was definitely something that didn’t get much press at the time.

For some reason I find it amusing the 3rd Chicago is getting was originally their own they'd previously traded.

It's worth a little more than another team's because it gives them a chance to offer sheet someone.

yeah he should have been in the meier trade.

Shakir was always going in the Meier trade. No room for him in the organization after they drafted Hughes.

Carolina got moderately better

Will always be their goaltending and finishing and system

For a second i was about to call BS on being 'moderately better'

But when I think of the definition... yea i would agree. Rantanen is a hell of a player and better than Necas. But Necas was also their leading scorer and over a PPG (though he did cool down).

so i agree. Not that you needed this explanation.

I also forgot about Hall. Crazy that he is depth for them. He's an offensive upgrade over Drury. Think Drury provided better D.

So do yuu think we do anything to “ keep up “ with the Canes? I can’t see Milker coming here. Maybe Nelson ? Nelson and someone like Gourde would be nice but not sure how we can fit both cap hits.

Sounds like a lot of cope from you guys. Rantenen is a top 10 producer and goal scorer in the entire league, typically bested only by the likes of Mackinnon, Draisaitl, mcdavid, and Kuch. Necas has obviously been a great producer in his own right this year but he’s not on Mikko’s level at all. Carolina was already a contender before this trade and now they have even more talent, in an area where historically in the playoffs they’ve been a bit underwhelming (offensive finish).

That being said, center depth was sacrificed in the trade and this isn’t a video game. Who knows what this does to their chemistry. History is littered with trade deadlines deals that look good on paper but don’t work out, and the bigger the transformation to the lineup the worse it usually turns out.

But I wouldn’t dismiss this as making only a “marginal” impact, one way or the other.
