Around the NHL 2024-25 regular season Part II

I mean I think the islanders and Lou sucks, but they are only like 5 points back at the moment

Ya and the trade deadline is basically 2 months away, less games cause of 4 Nations but still he's not gonna throw in the towel this early, he might in early March though.

They already announced that game last February, it's happening on March 1st of this year...

Oh shit I didn't even realize that lmao

My fault, I'm a dumbass 🤪

I was gleefully enjoying it until I saw it was from WEEI. It was very obviously them coping that the Bruins are terrible. Still funny, though.

I have family in New England and they hate everything about sports radio in that area. This was the guy's response to Marchand's defense. What a loser.

Not really news, but I was listening to a recent podcast with former Kings assistant GM Mike Futa who confirmed a rumor that I had heard many years ago. TL;DR one of the executives who was their capologist / CBA expert didn't understand a draft eligibility rule.

Futa said the scouts wanted to draft Radko Gudas with their last pick in the 2009 Draft. But VP of Hockey Ops Jeff Solomon told them they should take somebody else and sign Gudas as a free agent after the draft. The previous year, Martin Jones (WHL) went undrafted and signed with the Kings a few months later. The CBA permits an undrafted player with remaining draft eligibility to sign an ELC if he completed a full draft season in North America.

Solomon got confused (he wasn't a scout) because Gudas was slated to play in the WHL in 2009-10 but had played in Europe up to that point. Thereby Gudas wasn't eligible to sign an ELC like Jones. Similarly the Flyers tried to sign Czech forward Tomas Hyka after he went undrafted in 2011 and the NHL rejected the contract.

The Kings had Gudas as a summer camp invite and he made an immediate impression. The scouts half-jokingly glared at Solomon for the mistake. After playing in the WHL, Gudas was a more known commodity and went #70 in the 2010 Draft. Futa didn't mention it, but it was always my assumption that the Kings would have taken him with their next pick (#79). After Gudas was taken, the Kings dealt that pick to Toronto for a future 3rd.
