Lmao. I love how our biggest resident homer praised Armstrong for his “decade of winning” prior to our Cup (which consisted of tons of early playoff exits), yet the Lightning apparently “didn’t win” until Yzerman left. They went to three conference finals (and one Cup) during his 8-year tenure there, I’d say that’s pretty damn good.

Also if Armstrong is a better GM than Yzerman then maybe he will win a trade with him one of these times. Still waiting on that.

Agreed. Building prospect pool is great but at some point you need to actually convert them to nhl players who help you win. Tampa didn’t do it until he left and he ain’t doing it in Detroit when they needed it. His deadline inaction this year was egregiously bad.
I see it differently, Detroit isn't going anywhere even if they make the playoffs, no need for them to spend any assets this year

disagree on 2 levels. first, it's not just about how far they go in playoffs this year, it's about taking next step and getting playoff experience so they are better positioned to make playoff run in next couple years. second, they have so many prospects (and full roster of picks) that they literally won't have room for all of them. they have made 23 picks in top 2 rounds over last 6 years, including 9 1sts. cashing in some of them (not their top guys, but secondary ones and picks) to help the team is smart asset management. this was buyer's year at deadline and they could have dealt from surplus of prospects to get guys who would have made them far better now without it even hurting. they didn't. bad gming.

I never have bought into the "playoff experience" narrative, plus no one really worth a poop moved this trade deadline
they would be giving up assets for players to hopefully help them squeak into the playoffs just to lose

now if they were in a spot to add someone who could help them move deep into the playoffs, then that is a different discussion

That's sad. How can you not see the difference between a team that has experience and one that doesn't in the playoffs?

the Bakes teams had experience, the Hull teams had experience, the MacInnis teams had experience

Oh please point me to the dates of those teams actually winning? I can't believe after all of these years I completely missed the fact that we had already had championship teams.

I remember when we were caught up in Cup wins and leadership, and it culminated with going out and getting Mike Keane for his Cup-winning experience and his leadership - and suddenly we had too many leaders in the locker room and we had problems that way.

my point is pretty clear, these teams had players with playoff experience and it meant nothing
the whole concept is fine in a vaccum, but in real life fairly irrelevant

When you're talking about an individual player, playoff experience isn't a huge deal.

But it matters IMO when you're talking about a whole team learning what it takes/how to win in the playoffs (if that distinction makes sense). In other words, it's less about bringing in vet leadership and more about developing winning habits in for a less experienced/younger core group.

if you pop your cork early and go all in too soon the result can move a team in the wrong direction
I simply do not think the Wings are at that point yet

Fair enough, I definitely don't follow Detroit closely enough to have much of an opinion on what they should do. All I really know is f*** the red wings. If that franchise flounders for the next decade plus, I would shed no tears haha.

Nobody suggested them going all in. But there were guys moved for mid returns they could have easily paid with 2nds or 3rds or their 13th best prospect.

Former Blue TJ Oshie played his 1000th game. Less than 400 players have ever done so. That's a nice accomplishment. He was and still is one of my favorites. Nice video tribute too from the Caps.

it amazes me that over 500 of that total is with Caps. still think of him as former blue who just moved on.

I am all in on f*** the Wings

Interesting stuff re: Oshie to Caps trade.
Armstrong’s phone call reminds me of the scene from Moneyball. There’s no way to make that a good conversation. I’ve seen Armstrong talk about reaching out to those players later after a few weeks to reconnect and thank them for their contributions. But just as Oshie described, I doubt there is a way to experience a trade without some raw emotion.

Ugh. I don't know how I feel about that bit snuck in at the end that Oshie mentored Wilson. One of my favorite players mentoring possibly my least favorite player. Possibly unfair, but that makes me think less of Oshie
