I'm torn. As I said earlier, these kind of deals always kill you towards the end. And we aren't contending during the first couple or so years of a new deal anyway. But then to have him just walk and the Isles get nothing is a total embarrassment to the franchise...so there's that.

I don't hate the Isles enough to relish in this. If it were the Pens I'd be doing a little dance.

Someone on MetsRefugees is claiming his source is saying Tavares is finalizing a deal with the Leafs. It’s on the Islander off-season thread.

Yeah the site is going to be unusable and unbearable

Guess that means I’ll get some things accomplished tomorrow

Well, it's a wrap on the Island. Looks like Tavares is officially a UFA and headed out west in the next day or so.

Reading the Isles board right now

Feel bad for some Islander fans but seeing guys like Frankie Borrelli lose it on twiter over this puts a smile on my face

Lou can still do 1+8 deal since that's likely what all the other teams are bidding to rn.

Why would Tavares go for that? He could blow out his knee or get some other injury and miss out on $70 million.

Exactly. Not happening.

On a similar note, does the NHL allow opt out clauses? If I'm JT and I'm not completely sold on the direction of the Islanders, can I sign an 8 year deal with an opt out after say year 2? Well technically now it would be a 7 year deal with an opt out after year 2.
