There were several on this board who wanted to sign Clarkson last year and many thought $5M was a fair price.

Same thing with Smid.

Hey, I was against a Clarkson signing :p I was a fan of Smid, though. I don't think Clarkson is going to be as bad every year as he's been this year, though. His shooting % is well below his career norm, as is his shots per game.

I think getting Smid onto a decent team with a real system would see him come back into favor, too. I'd dangle Kindl out there and see if Calgary wouldn't do a straight swap. Getting both guys into new situations might be best.

I agree on Smid, but some on here were not just suggesting that we should get him but that he too was worth $5M. If I have time, I'll dig up those posts for proof.

And I'd still take Smid. Would've taken him when he was shipped off to Calgary too. I think he'd fit much better into the role Quincey is being asked to play right now than Quincey himself. Can't imagine Burke lets him go, though. He plays a style of game that Burke loves.

I might have been one of them... .:help: I've been fair to lousy in guessing cap hits lately, though. I never pegged Kindl at what he got, I thought Smith was low for the role we were giving him.

I was thinking of that Quincey spot, too. Looking forward a year, we could pencil Kronwall, Ericsson, and Dekeyser into the top4. Have Smid and Smith rotate into that open spot depending on how the pairings shake out. Then have some combination of Almqvist, Lashoff, Prospect, 1 year UFA vet to take up the last two spots.

I'm with you in doubting Burke moves him, though. they already have Wideman and Giordano, so I doubt they're looking for another (potential) puck mover like Kindl, and I think Burke originally drafted Smid before trading him for Pronger.

smid is tough but he can't move the puck at all. lefty too. and burke comes on top of most trades and kenny.. well..

smid is bottom pairing guy to me, that you can get from UFA for couple of mill. or even less if you are smart/lucky.

it's top 3 guy or bust for me.

Halak does t wanna start for Washington tonight because he doesn't want to play his old team

Serious? Is this in the media somewhere or just speculation? I'm not sure why, but that's a pretty big turn off for me if I was a GM looking for a goalie this summer. His former team should be just the guys he wants to go up against and stick it to.

St Louis is still a bit of a pretender for me. I know people put them up there with Chicago and Boston but I'd take the latter teams everyday. They've got depth and depth and depth, I just don't see that one guy that will lead them every night in the playoffs. West will be interesting this year with a ton of close matchups.

I believe the central will surprise this year. I think Colorado will win it. They match up well against chicago and st. louis. I see them beating a wc in round 1 and st louis in round 2.

That's the beauty of living in Canada, you can always find a Leaf fan in shouting distance.

As soon as the losing streak hit 5 games my entire social media existence was full of "Fire Carlyle"

It was like they were waiting for it to happen

are we allowed to gloat about the Maple Leafs demise in here?

Or Alfie making the right choice in which team he deems as playoff ready? I love how fast and hard the Sens fell when their fans were gloating about Alfie making the wrong choice. The Leafs failing is just funny, because well, it's the Leafs.

Brendan Shanahan is indeed leaving the NHL for the Maple Leafs, Yahoo Sports has confirmed.
