Hearing the NHL has reversed part of its penalty against the Devils for cap circumvention (Kovalchuk contract)....

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 2h
NHL will award Devils with the 30th pick in the Draft instead of the 1st round pick as usually determined. Also forgiving $1.5 mil of fine.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 2h
Needless to say, NHL teams are not happy with the leagues decision to let the Devils off the hook.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 2h
Devils were orginally fined $3 mil, had to forfeit a 3rd round pick in 2011 as well as a 1st in one of next 4 drafts...

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 2h
All kinds of reax from NHL teams to the Devils story. Some accusing NHL of doing new ownership a favour....

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 2h
More reax includes the assessment..teams that didn't break rules punished retroactively on cap recapture. Team that did, is not punished...

Embarrassing decision by the league. Also think they should be punished for basically conspiring with Kovy to help him go back home.

Exactly. Especially since they changed the rules to punish the teams who circumvented legally (us, Vancouver, Buffalo, etc.)

They were given a ridiculous punishment for pushing a poorly written rule...I was going to say, to the limit, but that was the point, there was no limit. Then instead of simply invalidating the contract and telling the Devils to do it again, the NHL gave them a draconian punishment, basically out of nowhere.

Meanwhile, Hossa, Zetterberg, Franzen were given similar contracts and not a peep.

Then to further compound the ass-backwardness, they introduce a cap recapture penalty, thereby punishing teams for signing players to perfectly legal contracts.

So I have no problem with scaling back the Devils punishment.

I think the recapture penalty should have made them leave the Devils' punishment in place. In the end, they could end up putting a far more severe punishment on teams with contracts the league considered "legal" than on the one team they actually punished for trying to circumvent the cap.

I don't disagree that the punishment they gave the Devils in the first place wasn't ridiculous - I didn't see anything wrong with the Kovy contract in light of the deals the NHL had already greenlighted - but to retroactively lighten a punishment like this is a joke.

If LeBrun's article is accurate at all, I cannot believe they let the Devils actually argue, but Kovy is gone. So what you were in on that decision and could have blocked it, that is ridiculous.

Pens getting outshot 20-4 through 30 minutes at Anaheim. No shots by a forward at even strength, lucky not to be getting blown out and they are tied 1-1.

The Pens 5 game road trip is their longest since 2011.

They still won the game, but what I've been thinking the latest weeks, it would not be bad to be the 2nd Wild Card and go To Metropolitan playoffs against Penguins.

If we could get this team on the ice for 1st round, we would have great chance to an upset and everything after Pittsburgh on that Division is weak teams. = easy 2nd round.

Zeta - Dats - Bert! (Bert worked well there at earlier in the season, if he is not with them, then he should be benched)
Gus - Legwand - Mule
AKader - Weiss - Alfie
Jurco - Sheahan - Tatar

Insane 4-line machine.

If that's short by one penalty killer, insert Abdelkader to 1st line and put either Helm (if healthy), Miller or Andersson to Weiss line.

that looks real good on paper. that F group is really impressive if they are all healthy. should be able to hide the D a by some.

though PVZ will take care that we will never see that lineup.

I agree. Pens have some really tough injuries and haven't played good playoff hockey last few years aswell.

Boston looks like the runaway favorite in the East, they're behind in points atm but #2 leaguewide in ROW's and #2 in goal differential, #1 in the East ofc.

Is that number of transactions or number of players/assets?

Obviously Holland and co. don't like to trade and when they do they rarely hit it out of the park (Stuart?), but I also think making the playoffs and picking late in the draft makes your assets less valuable in trades.

transactions.

and i guess that point has some truth in it as NJ is tied for second last. though still more than twice than DET.

Could part of it be the Wings philosophy of building through the draft and developing players. They haven't relied as heavily on free agency or had to rebuild. Being good for so long they were only adding a piece here or there to reload. They've also had 24 drafted (including Dekeyser and Lashoff) players who have played a game this year I think.

Not sure if it makes a big difference but could that be part of it.

At least Boston beat Tampa in the shootout. Rask and Bishop were both amazing. I think it was 0-0 into the 7th round and Reilly Smith won it.

C'mon Nashville (CBJ) and San Jose (MTL)!
