Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

I'm working on a mainboard thread, wondering if you guys can help me workshop it here:

If the Leafs go back in time and choose Matthew Tkachuk 1st overall, do they have a cup?
Definitely not. As bad as the Leafs are, MTkachuk was a playoff choker until he could play behind Barkov. Tkachuk isn't as good of a scorer or defensively as AM34 and your regular season success will be questionable if he's your focal piece over AM34.

I don't think AM34 is fundamentally broken, the Leafs have just created a culture of entitlement and shiny toys that doesn't help. Started with trading Kadri, then the Tavares signing, then the negotiations with Nylander, AM34, Marner and today you have a pressure cooker where it'll be very tough to succeed.

Now, MTkachuk on TML instead of Marner, whole different convo (assuming the flames make that trade).

lol remember this?

Getting the luck, winning games they shouldn’t, and winning games they should. Sounds like a good recipe tbh.

I’m not set on Toronto winning this series yet, though. We’ll see how it goes back in Florida. The Leafs have definitely gotten some hometown calls in the first couple of games and Florida will probably get them the next two games. I’d also expect Bobrovsky to improve.
Said this after Game 2 when everyone was declaring Toronto the winner

They aren't really happy with big guy Auston Matthews either, who's stat line is pretty similar
I know, but they will keep him, I expect he will leave when his contract is up or they will trade him the yr before his contract is done. I would guess he will want to return to the US, that's the thing with having too many US players, they eventually want to go back to the US to play.

I think so, consider the yr Tavares & Marner had & if you place Tkachuk with those two he would definitely protect their backs & all three could have had record yrs. Tkachuk does so many little things that most fans never so or think are important that result in success, it's not always about pts. They would still need a centre between Knies & Nylander & could have traded or signed a decent one in Free agency.

Yeah I personally think if the Jets got 1st overall instead in 2016 or the Leafs somehow picked Laine, Matthews would have already won a cup by now.

$11M?

He's probably asking for $13-$14M.
Marner will not get $11M, $13M nor $14M here in Ottawa; however, I expect some team desperate to add a "big name player" to sign him to attract more fans and sell season tickets. Might be a team at the bottom of the league salaries under contract as they are the ones who have the highest cap dollar availability.

Anaheim makes a ton of sense for Marner. Plenty of cap, great young core on the rise that could use an injection of skill from someone like him, good coach, no pressure and he can live his life away from the spotlight.

And their owner has given them the green light to spend. Probably the most logical landing place for him, at least in my opinion.
