Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

Last year’s cup winner was an absolute disaster of an org who did virtually nothing for over a decade pre-Bill Zito and new ownership. Whatever their trading history, they were no better run than we were.
Bro Dorion vs Tallon is still not a good look. Tallon did a better job than Dorion did given the resources they had.

I don’t think the Sens are uniquely the worst positioned team there ever was. People are free to disagree, but again, I don’t think we’re special.

To me the point is not Dorion vs Tallon. Given what he started with, it really is wild what he finished with - no disagreements. But regardless of how or why we got here, we are not eternally doomed.

The one positive I see for the near future of this team is that we have a lot of our pieces already in place, and still young or relatively young. We have a few holes, but every team does. We will have some cap room to address some of them.

2025-2026:

Brady - Stu - HOLE <- ideally addressed by an improvement over Giroux
Zetterlund - Cozens - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Amadio
Perron - xxx - xxx <- should be addressable

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - HOLE <- lesser hole if Jensen can remain competitive one more year
Kleven - Jensen
Matinpalo

Ullmark
Meri

and by 2026-27, we can hope that Yak will take over for Jensen even if it's just as a 3rd pairing guy. In the meantime, we can expect progress from Stu, Sanderson, Greig, Kleven, and fairly steady performance from the rest of them, as they will more or less remain in their primes. And that's assuming Staios doesn't make any more improving moves. I mean, he just addressed three major holes by signing Ullmark (regardless of playoff performance), solidifying 2C in Cozens (a health grenade avoided in Norris), and bringing Zetterlund (I overslotted him as a top 6, but he's a top 9 at a minimum)

The lack of prospects would have hurt us worse if we had more holes and even less cap room. We "just" need to draft better now so that by 2027-28 the prospects we pick can start replacing future holes.

Now this is not by any means a world-beating core, but one that is capable of making the playoffs on a semi-regular basis, and maybe surprise a few teams in future playoffs. That's basically what we had in the last few Murray years, before Dorion destroyed everything.

It was certainly very fun to watch surrounded by Habs fans here in Mtl.

It is disheartening watching our team struggle to muster as much effort, heart and enthusiasm as they showed last night.

I’m a little jealous of my brother (Habs fan). He got free tickets to the game last night. He said it was insane how loud it was pre puck drop.

It’s been a struggle for me to really appreciate the place we’re in. On one hand, we’re happy to be in the dance. On the other hand, it looks a lot like the Leafs are just playing with their food, so to speak.

But, the series ain’t over yet.

The Leafs are much better at snuffing out scoring opportunities than the Caps.

Heck, the Caps passed the puck directly to Habs players for their first two goals.

CTC was insane and loud before puck drop, as well.

Then loud most of the night.

One thing I notice across HF is that roster listing's always project way less turnover than what happens

3 years from now, up front, maybe
Brady
Stu
Greig
Pinto
Zetterlund
Cozens

On D
Sandy
Yak
Kleven

In goal
Ullmark
Levi

And I think on average, that would be less roster turnover than most

Yeah, I always assume no movement, because the moves are unpredictable. And honestly, I think that with competitive balance, the high picks if the team does badly, selling rentals at the deadline etc, just doing the minimum as a GM would work better than being hyperactive, as long as you draft well.

But certainly Staios has made some bold moves that have improved the team, so my projections are more of a baseline on which he can certainly improve.

Regardless of the final standing in the regular season the Caps are not as good a team as either the Leafs or Florida. I would even bet that Tampa is better than the Caps. The Habs played well but the whole game turned with the altercation at the end of the second. Otherwise Habs could have easily been down 3-0.

TB looking good.
4-1
5mins

These announcers are such homers they’re pathetic.

The Sens got 15 goals this year from their 1st line right winger. Just replacing CG with a 30-35 goal scorer makes the team far more dangerous. Just having the CG from 2 seasons ago ( 35G 44A) would have been huge this year and would have meant a victory or two in these playoffs.

Serious question, are we the youngest team in the playoffs in terms of career number of playoff games? All other teams are finding this extra gear to stave off elimination just shows how far we still have to go (even MTL I think has players that recently went to the cup finals)

Giroux and Perron have both played a ton in the playoffs.

Just saw that Matt Turek is leaving the Hamilton Bulldogs because they were 'unfortunately unable to come to terms on a contract extension'. Wonder if he's leaving to join the Sens? He did a really good job with that Hamilton/Brantford franchise.

He was Director of Player Personnel under Staios when they won the OHL Championship in 2022.

6 years with the Habs, seems he was let go once Hughes shuffled the deck

Would be a nice injection to the amateur room, though I'm not sure where else he would fit outside an amateur scout
