The one positive I see for the near future of this team is that we have a lot of our pieces already in place, and still young or relatively young. We have a few holes, but every team does. We will have some cap room to address some of them.
2025-2026:
Brady - Stu - HOLE <- ideally addressed by an improvement over Giroux
Zetterlund - Cozens - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Amadio
Perron - xxx - xxx <- should be addressable
Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - HOLE <- lesser hole if Jensen can remain competitive one more year
Kleven - Jensen
Matinpalo
Ullmark
Meri
and by 2026-27, we can hope that Yak will take over for Jensen even if it's just as a 3rd pairing guy. In the meantime, we can expect progress from Stu, Sanderson, Greig, Kleven, and fairly steady performance from the rest of them, as they will more or less remain in their primes. And that's assuming Staios doesn't make any more improving moves. I mean, he just addressed three major holes by signing Ullmark (regardless of playoff performance), solidifying 2C in Cozens (a health grenade avoided in Norris), and bringing Zetterlund (I overslotted him as a top 6, but he's a top 9 at a minimum)
The lack of prospects would have hurt us worse if we had more holes and even less cap room. We "just" need to draft better now so that by 2027-28 the prospects we pick can start replacing future holes.
Now this is not by any means a world-beating core, but one that is capable of making the playoffs on a semi-regular basis, and maybe surprise a few teams in future playoffs. That's basically what we had in the last few Murray years, before Dorion destroyed everything.
