Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

It will be interesting to see what happens over the long term with Mtl, that top line has been getting a lot of praise, but is it sustainable?

GF% is running at 61% for Slaf-Suzuki-Caufield, but xGF% is 48.1%. so

To put that into perspective, that xGF% is 66th out of the top 78 lines in TOI (200+ mins), but 24th in GF%. The Detla between expected and actual is 13.2 above expected, so maybe they are talented guys, perhaps but Hyman-Draisaitl-Mcdavid are +3.9, Knies-Matthews-Marner are +1.6, Lehkonen-Mackinnon-Rantanen were +1.8. That got me interested so I checked the correlation on individuals year over year for beating their xGF and there is very little correlation from one year to the next, and what little there is would likely be attributable to goaltending quality.

Long story short, I think that line is likely to regress, which probably shouldn't surprise anyone. They are still pretty talented offensive players, so they'll continue to be effective, but they simply aren't likely to be among the best lines in hockey over the long term. .
Don't tell @Xspyrit

See it. But that line has an elite passer and a top….5? Shooter in the NhL? I think they will always out kick their expected goals

IIRC Staois apparently said that the location of a prospect doesn't matter for our scouts, but i dunno.
He was actually asked if it was true we wouldn’t draft a Russian and said they don’t pick based on nationality.

But that was a bad question because we drafted Sokolov and would draft a Russian playing in the CHL for example. The question of whether we would draft someone playing in Russia has not been asked nor answered. But it’s kind of hard to do that when you don’t have scouts based there so I’m gonna assume we wouldn’t until proven otherwise.

It was Don Boyd who said this when asked, but what's the alternative? Say 'no we won't take Demidov because we've never seen him play due to our scouting budget being so small'?

Corey Pronman - who, whether you like him or not, is plugged into the scouting world - has made many allusions to Ottawa not taking Russians in the draft due to not having viewings of them. It's a known fact that the Sens have no scouting coverage in that part of the world.

Our scouts are not drafting a Russian known for his elite stickhandling and play driving that is under 6’2

Hes their Stutzle.

They already have Suzuki who matches Stu, a bit better at the moment. He's their Batherson but obviously going to be much more impactful

Stutzle vs Suzuki
Tkachuk vs Slafkovsky
Batherson vs Demidov
Zetterlund vs Caufield
Cozens vs Dach
Pinto vs Hage
Greig vs Beck
Halliday vs Newhook

Let's hope that Slaf doesn't develop too much and becomes jealous of Demidov

We really need Stutzle and Cozens to go boom next year.

You'd hope this stuff would be a teachable moment for teams to stop galaxybraning ways to avoid drafting talent, but probably not.

Our scouting staff is probably saying at the moment

"pfff, Tyler Boucher is bigger and would survive in the playoffs.... derp
"

Demidov was in a tier by himself at #2, and he was much, much closer to Celebrini than he was the guy at 3.

Teams just try to be the smartest people in the room.

I’m just glad he never made it to 7, we’d have undoubtedly made the same mistake the Habs did with Michkov annd Reinbacher and passed on him for the big RD.
