Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I don't see any scenario where a future HOF Giroux will be regulated to the 4th line. What would be the purpose of re-signing him only to place him on the 4th line? It makes no sense. Maybe Perron or more likely Amadio slips down a line, but I doubt it will ever be Giroux, he won't be ending his NHL career on the 4th line.

I don't know if he's that bad is he?

Some of the moves and RFA lowballing were made by Jeff Jackson before Bowman was brought in.

I don’t think anyone will come close to Dorion. You’d need to absolutely want to tank your franchise to keep a guy like that at work.

It wasn’t obvious at first because of the success the team Murray built on his first year and then the first few years of a rebuild are pretty easy, even though he still found a way to mess it up in hindsight

Frankly, do the comparison but even Milbury is not even close as bad

Pretty wild that every major move the Oilers made this off-season blew up in their face.

Traded McLeod for Savoie, didn't re-sign Foegele and let Broberg and Holloway get poached by St. Louis for a 2nd+3rd.

12.471M ended up being the cost for those 4 players, but had they offered Broberg and Holloway fair extensions instead of trying to get them to accept pennies on the dollar for the priviledge of playing on a potential contender, I suspect they could have got that down to closer to 10-11M and avoided the offersheets altogether.

Instead they spent 11.75M on veterans Skinner, Arvidsson, Henrique and Klingberg, who have a combined 68 points in 194 games (29P/82GP average).

Meanwhile the 4 younger players they let go have a combined 162 points in 266 games (50P/82GP average).

Got much older and much worse. The Dorion special.
Foegle was leaving no matter what. He said he loved his time in Edmonton but was determined to find a place where he could have a bigger role.

Dude went from 8th in ice time (13 min) on EDM to 5th in ice time (16 min) for forwards after joining LA, still on the 3rd line though. Surprised he wanted a bigger role more than a chance at a cup. Would be funny if he has a big series against EDM i the playoffs

I think I’d rather have Dorion.

LA is at this point looks like a better team than Edmonton.

I'd say they're more balanced and have better depth at every position. Having said that, I pick EDM to beat them because it feels like they have LA's number in the playoffs. I thought Danault + Kopitar, a couple of two-way beasts, could contain McDrai, but that hasn't worked the last 3 seasons.

Just heard a story out of Toronto about Scott Laughton who they picked up at the deadline. He has struggled so far and it turns out he 's been living in a hotel since the trade. Compare that to the Sens where Cozens has been at Batherson 's and Zlund has been at Timmy's from the days they arrived.
Maybe it's not much but then again maybe one team has a bunch of prima donnas and the other is pretty close.

I don't think the guy is living at the Toronto equivalent of a Vanier roach motel. I get what you're saying, but a top of the line hotel is probably more comfortable for some people than being a guest in another person's home. Especially an older guy like Laughton. It's different when you're 22.

I also assume Zetterlund is staying at the Brookestreet, unless Adam Gaudette opened up his bachelor apartment to him.

Tony Deangelo has completely turned the Islanders program around. Amazing what a PMD can do for your coach and overall game. He’s a dick but he could get the Isles into the playoffs

I mean the team's young stars are all unmarried and childless, as opposed to Laughton. Maybe he doesn't want to live in the bachelor pads of Marner, Matthews or Nylander?

Or maybe he didn't want to live with any of the players? If he's staying at the Fairmont, he's literally walking across the street to get to the arena. Or he could be at any of a bunch of high end hotels within walking distance of the arena.

I'm usually pretty eager to cast aspersions on the character of the Leafs core but sometimes the guy coming into town doesn't want that kind of arrangement...what can they do?

He's also staying one more year in Toronto and he has a baby that's under a year old. Maybe he's already looking to buy a place and get settled in.

Yikes I like this trade even more now. This is way too much. Thank god we have our core locked in around or below 8.

The guy is what? A #3 Dman?

Big L at that Chychrun contract even if you account for cap inflation. I doubt he even hits his current production over the next three years. Happy we aren't paying him that contract.

Then again Caps will have loads of capspace especially if Ovechkin doesn't play an additional year or two.
