If a neck guard is even remotely uncomfortable or distracting, it is understandable. I don't know if it is distracting, or if it is more of a cultural thing within hockey.
Most players aren't McDavid type superstars, and there is a lot on the line for them. If a piece of equipment hinders their performance in anyway, they have to weigh the odds of it actually preventing injury vs how much it hinders their performance. It's why players don't wear full face shields unless they have a jaw injury.
The odds of there being a death or injury because of a skate slicing the neck is very low, especially if players don't deliberately do anything reckless like kick-check someone as a form of interference, which at this point will probably never happen again. It does happen sometimes that someone takes a dip in the corner and a skate comes up, but you never see people using kicks in the middle of an ongoing lane in the NHL.
Realistically, it should be mandated by the NHL and NHLPA because even if the odds of an injury or death by a skate slicing the neck are so low, the consequences are enormous. I understand players not wearing one if they feel it will hinder their game, whether justified or not. The same way that I understand players not wearing helmets back in the 80s (before composite sticks). It doesn't mean it's right, but I can see where they might be coming from.
Do you think Dorion wanted to bring in a sexy big name with management experience who Melnyk probably knew of from when he last followed hockey in the 90s?
It would be Pierre McGuire all over again.

I remember wearing them because all the minor hockey associations mandated them after Clint Malarchuk. Looked dorky but I don't recall them being in anyway uncomfortable.
I grew up wearing them so they didn't feel uncomfortable. I might have felt differently if I never wore them and then after nearly 2 decades, I had to overnight.

realty versus fiction. Energy dissipation needs 2 things
1) a change in state
2) a loss in mass
F* (Delta T) = M * (Delta V) force (Or change in force) times the time it is acted on (change in time) = change in momentum or Mass x velocity (Changes in either)
F= M *DV/DT = M * A mass times acceleration. Newton's law
2) so, have something break off, and energy is dissipated.. The best example is Formula 1 cars. They are designed to disintegrate on impact, with each flying piece is energy lost.

While the Guardian Cap uses foam dimples, they are not large enough. And need to be 1-2" thick. And need to be of a polymer that can deform and stay deformed, and be thus used only once.
Guardian caps need to have an outer and inner shell, with dampeners in between. That is difficult.
A 1/4 to 1/2 inch hard foam will not absorb enough energy. Soft foam will collapse and be useless. Intermediate foam will work, but needs to be designed as I wrote.

I am hoping that you are 55 years old or older. If not, you don't have a feel for hockey, 1970-1990.
Watch old footage. Scoring was way easier. Goalies were not, what they are today.
The famous Guy Lafleur slapshot goal against the Bruins in 1979 (Semi finals on Cheevers in game 7), would never go in today.

We have gone through goalies like toilette paper in flu season. Maybe, its not them.

I can understand being a hot take merchant like SAS. Drives engagement and helps his numbers.
But Biz is a former player actively simping for a team that never wanted anything to do with him, even today. It's sad as f***.
