Around the League

I'm sensing a pattern here...

I will say I can't object to him being inevitably being inducted into the Hall. Once he got that Vezina (regardless of what context you want to throw at it) it became not a matter of if but when he would be inducted. But because he is a personable guy who happened to share a locker room with a couple of the best players in the world for most of his career he gets a weird reputation around here and seemingly more credit than I think is warranted.

Also his 2018 final performance was abysmal.

That is fine and all, but I was replying to the “massively overrated “ comment. I haven’t seen anyone say he is some kind of superstar. He is just rated.

That was a statement game by Rantanen. What a way to stick it to your old team.
Right when he needed to, because to be honest 45 minutes into that game nobody was in more trouble than Rantanen. Huge third period by him, I would guess he springs forward after this. He had struggled some since leaving Colorado but that was the guy most of us remembered from there.

Perusing the Kings board, there's the suggestion that Gavrikov is gone, so that's a good sign. I'm not in love with signing Ehlers this summer, I'd prefer to take our chances with Connor next summer. The question is whether we can convince Marner to come here? My guess is the odds are much longer on him. So I'm fine if we can sign Gavrikov but Marner signs elsewhere. Marner is a great player who contributes in all three areas, I just think he's going to be very tough to sign given the interest across the league.

Same. I think we have the prospect pool up front to not swing on Ehlers, instead inserting kids if we can't land the big fish in Marner - especially if Kane is back. But on the back end, I don't think that same luxury exists. But signing Gavrikov could give us that luxury going forward. I also like Fabbro.

If we get Gavrikov that is a really big piece. Yeah we would all love to land Marner, but for me Gavirkov really is the prime free agent. I think he allows you to slot guys correctly. Fabbro is interesting as a guy that can survive second pairing minutes on the right side until ASP is ready. I don't get the vibe they are moving on from Gust at all though when we throw this around. I think we hope they do, not sure they will. Gavrikov knocks Chiarot to the third pairing and all of a sudden our D isn't a nightmare for the first time in a long time.

Our defense with Gavrikov would be pretty sick.

I didn't mind Gust. I think there is a fair chance Chiarot is dealt if we sign Gavrikov. And I think the big question mark is what they plan to do with ASP. If we're burying ASP, I think Fabbro would be a really nice signing to fill out that right side.

Fabbro is a solid add whether or not ASP is in Grand Rapids.

Gavrikov has talked about how his family like LA long term. I’m doubting he hits the market right now.

Quenneville apparently back working in the NHL.

This f***ing league. Seriously. Between the gambling woven into the game, the ads all over every visible surface, the complete lack of any integrity by allowing shitbags like Quenneville and Bowman back into the league, I think I really may be done.

Hockey is by far my favorite sport, but I don't know that I can take anymore of Bettman's shit just to watch it.

It's a gimmick league with zero vision. If I didn't grow up with the Wings being great, I'm, sure I'd be like the vast majority of the country and prefer to watch an episode of Antique Roadshow over an NHL playoff game.

You knew it would happen, especially after Bowman weasled his way back. This kind of thing makes me happy the NHL is lowest on my give-a-shit radar in the hockey world. The only appeal for me is watching players I followed in NCAA/CHL/WJC making the bigs. It has even less appeal now that it shows leniency to people who cover up for sexual predators.

Oh for sure. Bettman himself started rehabbing their image a couple years ago by inviting them to the GM's meeting so Bowman and Quenneville could apparently share the unique wisdom they acquired after the experience. "When a player reports that a coach sexually assaulted him, don't cover it up. Also probably don't write him a glowing performance review, put his name on the Cup and let him spend a day with the Cup."

I mean, without going through that experience how could someone possible know not to do that?

That's a pretty great summation of the absurdity of the situation. It's along the lines of "I learned I shouldn't offer the person who tried to kill me a place to stay when they get out of prison". This would be a much bigger deal if hockey had the draw of other major sports.

That's the bummer for me. I've been following the Wings since they were the Dead Things. This past season has been the worst product I've ever seen from the NHL. I barely follow any other sport other than hockey, but this is getting to the point where it's just not worth it.
