Man, that really sucks. 21 year old kid who has been medically advised not to continue playing.

I just saw that. He left school after only 1 year too. Really sucks for him. Sucks for the Jets, I know they thought he could be a really good NHLer in the future, they had high hopes for him. He has a younger brother, I wonder if he has the same thing.

Pumped he got an entry level contract at least and the signing bonuses and the insurance

just helps to soften the blow from such a terrible situation
I find it interesting to read about pension terms of the four major pro sports. In both the NBA and MLB you basically have some kind of pension and/or health insurance for life if you play briefly. In MLB one game gets you health insurance for life and 43 days on a team's 40-man roster guarantees a $34,000 pension at retirement age. Unfortunately Lucius was never on an NHL roster and is not eligible for a pension, and I would imagine his contract will only pay out his AHL salary and signing bonuses and only insure him for the duration of the contract.

Even when trying to frame a lucid critique of one another, hockey writers cannot help but include language derogatory towards women

Not going to argue the point but Olberman is absolutely not a hockey writer. He’s a firebrand political commentator that likes hockey. Strangely, is a Canucks fan.

Connor Bedard is an NHL worst -84 in the last two seasons and a career 38% on faceoffs. Safe to say he has not come as advertised thus far...but I'd wager a bet it is almost entirely based on the team and organization he plays for.

With his contract extension looming, I could honestly see the Blackhawks trading him for the right deal. He still obviously has a lot of value, but this seems to be going very poorly.

If he's at all available, I think this team should be doing whatever it takes aside from Hughes to swing a deal. Pipe dream, but you gotta wonder.

He’s on a really bad team though and only in his second year. There’s no way he’s going anywhere regardless of if he lives up to (insane) expectations or not

No team will trade away their 1st OA unless it’s the Oilers.

Hey on the bright side at least we aren't the Buffalo Sabres. 14 consecutive years missing the playoffs..... Christ.

Think it depends on the expectations. Bedard isn’t looking like a generational player. For a 1st overall pick, his “sophomore slump” still has him at 20 goals 60 points. Comparatively the others drafted after him including Michkov has less points. I think Celebrini’s toolset is better (and don’t forget Jack Hughes’ first two seasons were pedestrian) but I will still take Bedard over anyone from his draft class.

What are the odds Bedard ever suits up for his hometown team? With each passing season in that Chicago quagmire, I'd say the odds increase.

The only issue is whether his 'player development woes' in Chicago results in him failing to reach his potential--which at one time seemed Crosby-like.

Bedard will be lucky to reach Patrick Kane levels let alone McJesus. Right now he looks to be more like RNH.

Bedard stats/play not only reflect a player on a bad team, but a player being played in a position he can't play at the NHL level.

He simply isn't a NHL center. Could be a great winger though

Oh man that is too bad for the kid, worked so hard to get to the NHL only to be forced to retire at 21. Hope he will be able to live a normal life.

Not going to lie, when I first read the tweet from EF, I thought it was a prank, seeing how the name of the disorder has the name "Ehlers" in it, and Lucius plays for Winnipeg. I thought somebody hacked Friedman's account.

3% maybe. This is a complete pipe dream. He's in Chicago for years to come. They are most likely to become successful with Bedard and he'll sign there long term. If not he'll become his own man in that period and have many more incentives in choosing where to play. Hometown team is not likely to be one of them at that point if he's thinking clearly and has his choice. NHL players are chasing a hockey dream, not a living in their hometown dream.

terrible. his dad passed away quite young too - only 65.
If he has children, they should get checked out by doctors and find out what caused Ray's death. Maybe something hereditary if both Grandpa and Dad pass between 62-65. Something they may need to watch out for as they get older.

Ding ding ding.

Watched a decent amount of Blackhawks games and he simply doesn't have the IQ to be a reliable center. Poor defensive reads and very poor at faceoffs . He can be an elite playmaking winger that needs to be positioned beside a legit two-way center to cover his ass.

Unfortunately for this kid, he was hyped up to being the next Crosby/McDavid when his realistic ceiling was Mitch Marner.

Chicago desperately needs to target someone like John Tavares in UFA who can help him out in the short-term.
