Around the League Thread | Post Purge

lol how do you even continue the game after the ceremony?

bitd when gretzky broke the record there was iirc a much longer and more boring ceremony with a platinum stick and an even uglier oil painting and some other shit and when play finally resumed we scored the next three goals to break a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 (and eventually 6-3) blowout

LA missed the playoffs badly, but we needed those two pts badly to squeak into the playoffs and ended up two goals away from the cup of course

bure ended the afternoon scoring his 50th goal of the year on an empty netter, en route to leading the league in goals for the first time and being the first canuck to ever lead the league in anything worthwhile

So couple things. While Ovechkin was incredibly durable he also missed like 2 total seasons from lockouts/covid. Overall he beat the record in the same amount of games played as Gretzky, so its very possible someone else could break the record even if they aren't quite a healthy as Ovi.

It is remarkable though that ovie stayed relatively healthy during his career considering that he played a very heavy game. He used to literally hunt guys down and hammer them into the boards like a traditional 4th line energy guy, and i think he's quite high up in the all time hits list too.

The guy had a major injury this year and still scores 40 plus goals. His durability is almost as admirable as the goals record itself.
He is the definition of the idiom, Red Machine Never Breaks.

Congratulations to Ovechkin, only way to beat the record was to have a long and healthy career and he did it. Love the immediate post-goal celebration too and love that down the stretch he was just absolutely sniping pucks to earn it.

The points record, though... think goalies will have to be wearing tight bodysuits for that one to fall.

I feel like I've said this before -- but nothing about watching Gatcomb in Abbotsford would have made me think he'd be on a 17 goal pace in the NHL this year

makes you wonder how many careers have stalled/ended because the player just never received a break/opportunity. i guess that applies to normal everyday people too.

Dallas not looking that great lately even though they have been winning. Defence is not looking great outside of Harley and Lindell. Even those two are starting wear down, especially Harley who is not used to logging big mins. Last year they started the playoffs with Tanev and Heiskanen on the backend compared to Dumba and Bischel this year.

Also, if the Wild are not enamoured with Rossi some smart team should pick him up. Even in a physical game against a bigger team he still plays his game and doesn’t look out of place.

Minny beats dal in OT to return to an 8 point lead. CBJ playoff hopes look like they are coming to and end. 2-0 down to Ott. 6 back of Mon and this is game 76 for then.

Through the power of Youtube, it's all on there. It was actually quite short. No stick or painting, just a book. What's crazy is that 31 years later, Bettman is still there! Also, classy of him to thank Pat Quinn first.

I don't get why Leonsis is there, unless Ovi wanted it that way.

Apparently today is the anniversary of the Caps winning the draft lottery to take Ovechkin.
Man. And it’s April 6, and most teams have 5-6 more games left. Just shows how much the nhl season drags on now these past 21 years. Lottery is done after the season just before PO begin.
