Gretzky is f***ing wasted holy shit
This is a clip of Shaq talking about drinking in public. He doesn't do it. (I'm guessing he would if he got a private room or something), vs in an open restaurant.

If Wayne is intoxicated, that seems like a poor decision to not control his alcohol knowing that he would be interviewed if Ovy scored 2 or 3 goals tonight.

Can't believe I'm about to witness him breaking it. I remember that 802 goal Gretzky scored because it was against the Canucks and McLean was the goalie.

At least he won't be scoring it on the Canucks!

i watched that game on tv. a very old memory but i think it was a saturday or sunday afternoon game. goergeous gretzky-esque pass by marty mcsorely of all people.

it’s really too bad ovie isn’t breaking the record in canada. how awesome would it be to show gretzky on the jumbotron and then everybody rains boos at him?

I get that a) Wayne Gretzky owes me nothing, b) money corrupts people, c) you shouldn't assume heroes are good people, d) etc etc but it's so disappointing to imagine him hanging out with people like Kash Patel. It's not a conservative/liberal thing at this point, these people deliberately spread lies that f*** up public discourse and alienate people from their families.

I guess we're witnessing history, but I'm surprisingly meh about it. On the face of it, Ovechkin's record is far superior to Gretzky's anyway.

Ovechkin broke into the league the same year as Sidney Crosby in 2005. You simply can't compare the league over the past 20 years to the quality of league Gretzky played in. If Gretzky had broken in, in 2005 instead of the 1978, there's simply no way he'd have ever gotten near 894 goals.

Watching Gretzky and those stacked Oiler teams fill the net in the 80's, facing those small goalies with their skinny pads, is almost comical when you see the highlights. Totally different era.

Wait until the Gretzky haters find out that Ovechkin is Russian lmao
Here's the thing, Gretzky is a) not even from the country of the deranged leader he's sucking up to, b) that very deranged leader is threatening the country (for literally zero reason) he is from that he was previously almost universally regarded as a hero for, and c) he essentially came out against Canada with the whole garbage during the Four Nations.

There's a traitor element that makes what Gretzky is doing worse than Ovechkin, not to mention the whole thing about Ovechkin potentially getting his family in real danger should he speak out against Putin. This is not to say that I think what Ovechkin is doing is right, but these aren't quite the same IMO.

It's remarkable how my opinion of Ovechkin changed from Putin's useful idiot a couple years ago to amazing generational athlete achieving the impossible at age 39. While my opinion of Gretzky went the exact opposite direction from my childhood Canadian hero to Trump's useful idiot, and now hanging out with Kash Patel??? I'm just exasperated at how the world has turned completely upside down.

Gretzky had a choice, he chose to go with that orange ghoul. Turned his back on us, he in shows up for appearances.

Not a word from him since the threats were made upon this country and he’s mad at Canadians about his political choice? Read the room, Wayne.

Him showing up to the 4 nations final was all I needed to know.

It should be an amazing feat for us who follow hockey, but unless you are a die hard Ovy/Caps/or just a hockey historian, it's lost a good amount of lustre given the world events since 2022 and what is currently going on as well. I personally, can't separate the two.

Respect the accomplishment, but not going to swoon over it.

The turnaround in Ovy's production from last season up to the half way mark to now is just insane. His goals over the past 100 games after his very slow start to 23/24 is remarkable.

Without the lost games due to lockouts & Covid (82 in 04/05, 34 in 12/13, 13 in 19/20, 26 in 20/21), that is 155 games he missed out on playing, not due to injury/suspension.

Prorated stats for the 3 partial seasons were:
12/13 - .67 GPG pace (32 in 48), so that would have been 22 more goals with another 34 games
19/20 - 0.70 GPG pace (48 in 68) so that would have been 9 more goals with another 13 games.
20/21 - 0.53 PGP pace (24 in 45), but this was a different season, so would have been another 13 goals in 26 games.

That's 44 goals. Plus whatever he could have scored in 04/05. But, him having say a 40 goals is likely being ultra conservative that season. The guy could be 80 goals or more higher right now. So, be close to 975 now. Crazy to think he could have eclipsed 1,000 goals without any workstoppages. Just the league decisions alone, he could be 60 some goals higher and would need a 40 some goal year next year to hit it.

The goal scoring record is one I never thought I'd see broken in my lifetime, this is pretty amazing for hockey.
It is. Had Mario had good health he would have broken it like 20 years or so ago.

690 goals in 915 games.

If he was capable of getting to 1,400 games like Wayne and Ovy, safe to bet he gets 200 more in those 500 games. Likely pushing to the 1,000 mark. But, he was not blessed with both hockey (back) and life (cancer) health.

Is it safe to say no current player will reach Ovechkins record, whatever it ends up being?

If not, and I dont think any current player can, will Ovechkins record be beat in our lifetimes?
